Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president was facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."
The American source said: "Obama is overwhelmed. There is a zero sum tension between his ability to attend to the economic issues and his ability to be a proactive sculptor of the national security agenda.

This isn’t about being tired, too many hours, or anything else except an effort to show disrespect to England.
Good lord...almost as blatant as “I have a headache”
So I’ve heard...
Obama, ‘’exhausted’’ Translation: Stoned and hung-over. F’ing useless pile ‘o’ crap is what he is.
Unqualified for the job and unable to perform.
Those late-night Hollywood bashes.
I agree with you. Trying to do all the wrong things does wear a person out. He might be surprised at how little effort it takes to accomplish good things.
should we not wake him up???
How could so many people be so stupid as to voluntarily elect this man to the most important position on earth?
indisputable GWB was Britain’s best friend and they have gotten totally hosed by Obama.
The French president has no respect for Obama.
Chavez/Amadinetc. mock Obama.
China is pissed.
Japan lefties trying to kick us out.
See any of that increased world respect anywhere?
BTW, GWB also was Afruca’s best friend.
Never send a Community Organizer to do a President's job!
If he is unable to perform the duties required by the office, he needs to resign. Of course, he is far too egotistical to put the needs of the COUNTRY before his own.
Or telling our enemies that Washington is too distracted to worry about them...
Not even a Bush league player. Pee Wee league, maybe, but all wee weed out. Should perhaps moderate his alcohol consumption.
Not that he's got the "highest job", there is nothing else to campaign for and real work is expected to be done. Only problem is, he's in way over his head and has absolutely no idea how to carry out his job. Therefore, he must rely on handlers to tell him what to do and how to do it.
The result is both the Peter Principle and "affirmative action" being carried out to the extreme.
It didn't happen to have been some UK/Brown dinner, was it??
In truth, he's an intellectual lightweight Eliza Doolittle.
Oh well, at least I can take solice in knowing that he is up at night worried about the economy. And the more he does, the more his insomnia kicks in.
Why is anyone surprised?
Who would have guessed that 2 years of campaigning is not the same as actual executive experience?
