Hey, why in the hell does the senate have its own subway?

So senators can get to and from the Capitol and the Hart Building w/o having to face the media. I've ridden it, btw. It's no more than a block or two long.

what are you talking about/ The subway is free access for anyone traveling between the Capitol; and the Congressional/Senate office buildings.

True enough. I've ridden it several times both to and from the Hart and Rayburn buildings.

Hey, why in the hell does the senate have its own subway?

That was my first thought. Talk about oligarchy. How much did that cost us???

Underground link between the Senate building and Capitol building. It used to be open to the public, don’t know if that is still the case.

Rode it once with my family. Sen. Fred Thompson and Hal Heflin entered and took the seats across from us.

Introductions were made and Heflin noticed my oldest (9 at the time) had a wallet with chain attached to his belt loop and asked my son how much money he had in his wallet. Son pulled out the wallet and started to open it; Thompson held out his hand to stop him and said, “Son, let this be a lesson to you, never open your wallet in front of a politician”.

As far as I know, the subway is not off limits to citizens, it was built as a convenience for them to get to and from without having to deal with the weather, not the press.

Each chamber does have its own elevator to the Floor, neither the public nor the press is allowed on it. One only needs to see the footage of the seriously rude reporters who were hassling Sen. Bunning as he attempted to get to the Floor for a vote, one kept putting his foot into the space to keep the doors from closing, the jerk.

I actually met McCain yesterday at National Airport, we rode the escalator down to the the screening area and went through security screening for US Airways. Made small talk with him but he did not say much. He was traveling with just one aide.

I was just thinking about the one time I rode it - it was during President Reagan’s second inauguation and I was going to a reception for the Alabama State Society. Who gets on as I’m getting on but Howell Heflin - absoutely 10 sheets to the wind with a case of champaign under one arm. The guy I was with introduced me to him since I was from Alabama and he acted like he was hoping I didn’t notice either his condition or the case of champaign....I’ve told that story many times....

If you're looking for an investment I have a farm in Arizona that pays workers $50 an hour to pick lettuce.

What a damn shame for Scott Brown. Looks like the living dead sitting next to the living. McCain will pickle his brain and dull his instincts.

I actually was down in the "members only" tunnel/subway just 2 weeks ago, (the week of the shooting) which runs from the Senate side, under the Capital building, and to the House side of DC.

Honestly, it's a small miniature train sort of thing, with no top on it.

Two sets of tracks, and a hall/path running along side of it.

Since I'm in a wheelchair, we took the path, which was a long push for me.

The story behind why I was even down there is long, but fascinating. Short version - It was at the suggestion of Senator Bob Casey, of Pennsylvania, and was prompted because of a complaint I made directly to him regarding wheelchair access into the Russell building.
