Underground link between the Senate building and Capitol building. It used to be open to the public, don’t know if that is still the case.

Rode it once with my family. Sen. Fred Thompson and Hal Heflin entered and took the seats across from us.

Introductions were made and Heflin noticed my oldest (9 at the time) had a wallet with chain attached to his belt loop and asked my son how much money he had in his wallet. Son pulled out the wallet and started to open it; Thompson held out his hand to stop him and said, “Son, let this be a lesson to you, never open your wallet in front of a politician”.

As far as I know, the subway is not off limits to citizens, it was built as a convenience for them to get to and from without having to deal with the weather, not the press.

Each chamber does have its own elevator to the Floor, neither the public nor the press is allowed on it. One only needs to see the footage of the seriously rude reporters who were hassling Sen. Bunning as he attempted to get to the Floor for a vote, one kept putting his foot into the space to keep the doors from closing, the jerk.

I was just thinking about the one time I rode it - it was during President Reagan’s second inauguation and I was going to a reception for the Alabama State Society. Who gets on as I’m getting on but Howell Heflin - absoutely 10 sheets to the wind with a case of champaign under one arm. The guy I was with introduced me to him since I was from Alabama and he acted like he was hoping I didn’t notice either his condition or the case of champaign....I’ve told that story many times....
