I believe the parable of the rich man was about producing spiritual fruit, not making money.

When He wanted to talk about spiritual fruit He told the parable of the seeds that fell on various kinds of ground.

I agree though, He could well have meant spiritual in the parable of the bags of gold, but it could also refer to using what God has given you in a physical sense too.

The New Testament is replete with references to the coin of the realm and it means just that in those references. Ananias and Sapphira when they sold their property and lied about how much they had gotten. I see that once again as an example of both the spiritual and the physical.

He certainly taught that a worker was worth his wages and in the Sermon on the Mount He told the listeners that God would supply their needs, using Solomon and his riches for comparison.

And then Paul stressed he had learned to be content with what he had, saying he had known times of having enough and other times when he had to scrape by.

I’ve always felt He doesn’t expect us to be dirt poor but rather to be satisfied with what we have and wait for the rest when we get home!
