The Medford man whose firearms were seized by police for safekeeping Monday when he was taken into protective custody has asked for their return.
David J. Pyles has asked police to return the items taken from him when a SWAT team and negotiators descended on his Effie Street home early Monday. He sent an e-mailed request today, forwarding copies to legislators and media outlets.
Medford police said they were watching the Effie Street home starting Sunday night in response to law enforcement concerns about the man after he was placed on administrative leave from his job on Thursday.
A Medford police news release described him as disgruntled and said police knew he had legally purchased several firearms over two days. Police identified the guns as a Heckler & Koch .45-caliber handgun, a Walther .380-caliber handgun and an AK-47 rifle.
In what police described as a "proactive" move, they wanted to defuse the situation before people started their daily routines on Monday.
The guns, along with another handgun and a shotgun the man also owned, were seized for "safekeeping" Monday, police said. The man was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation, police said. He was released several hours later.
Now, Pyles wants his property returned.
Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said police try to return found, stolen or seized property to its rightful owner as soon as possible and have a procedure for doing so. If the property was seized as evidence, courts have the final say on when it can be returned.
Hansen declined to discuss Pyles' request, but described the department's process, which can take several weeks. Processing weapons takes longer than other items, he said.

What crime was he charged with?
Just another case of theft-by-government.
Suspicion of being suspicious!
i doubt he will ever have his firearms returned.
That seems rather suspicious.
They came in and took him and his property into custody because he bought some guns in a short period of time after being fired. His former boss told police he was “disgruntled.” So, they took him in on the thought that he might, at some point, possibly, maybe commit a crime at some time in the future.
Say goodbye to your guns. Cops will never return them.
To make a long story short, the cops show up and take about 12 expensive shot guns he uses to compete with in pro skeet shooting tournaments.
From what I understand the cops take any guns that are in a house in a situation like that for 30 days then return them.
Meant to add, there were no arrests made.
Tell that to the people whose firearms were confiscated during the Katrina debacle.
I would have bribed them with donuts!
I never heard what happened either way.
I’ve had friends who got their guns back battered and rusty, it looked like the cops just tossed them in a basket.
Did he get violent/physical or commit a crime at the work place prior to leaving?
Most have never been returned.
>What crime was he charged with?
From everything I’ve read: That’s just it, he wasn’t charged with any crime.
If the guy goes nuts and shoots his girlfriend after the cops leave , they get sued.
They descended on his private residence early in the morning after watching for a few hours and asked that he come out and talk. He did so, unarmed and with his hands in the air. They then apprehended him without charging him, put him in the county mental health facility for the weekend for observation, search his house and confiscated his firearms and ammunition, then released him. All because his former boss said he was “disgruntled” when he was fired.
Ray Nagin never intended to return anything.
