JACKSON, Miss. An 18-year-old Mississippi lesbian student whose school district canceled her senior prom rather than allow her to escort her girlfriend and wear a tuxedo said she got some unfriendly looks from classmates when she reluctantly returned to campus Thursday.
Constance McMillen said she didn't want to go back the day after the Itawamba County school board's decision, but her father told her she needed to face her classmates, teachers and school officials.
"My daddy told me that I needed to show them that I'm still proud of who I am," McMillen told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "The fact that this will help people later on, that's what's helping me to go on."
The district announced Wednesday it wouldn't host the April 2 prom. The decision came after the American Civil Liberties Union told officials a policy banning same-sex prom dates violated students' rights. The ACLU said the district not letting McMillen wear a tuxedo violated her free expression rights.
McMillen said she felt some hostility toward her on the Itawamba County Agricultural High School campus.
"Somebody said, 'Thanks for ruining my senior year.'" McMillen said.
The school board issued a statement announcing it wouldn't host the event in Fulton, "due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events."
The statement didn't mention McMillen or the ACLU. When asked by the AP if McMillen's demand led to the cancellation, school board attorney Michele Floyd said she could only reference the statement.

I have personal beliefs about the gay lifestyle. But that doesnt mean I have a right to tell those people what to do with their lives. Just like they dont have a right to tell me what to do with my life.
That’s my point.
If they leave me alone, I leave them alone.
In this case, both girls go to the school. From what I’ve read, each could go to the prom, but not “together”. Both were required to wear dresses. And they were told if they were seen together and anybody complained, they could be removed.
Personally, if they weren’t going to make a big deal out of it and thereby ruin it for others, I don’t see why the restrictions were necessary. But I wouldn’t try to make them change the rules — a locality should be able to enforce their own view of propriety. Around my parts, we are way past caring about what people wear to the prom — we actually have gay proms apparently.
I agree with you on all accounts.
I think you are on the money. Kids have gone to proms “with a group of friends” since forever; no requirement to have a “date.” Had they just gone to the dance to have fun and not made this an issue, there would have been no further action.
We had a fellow running for the school board a few years ago who was asked about this at a forum. He said he had no problem with what consenting adults did behind closed doors, but the last time he checked high school kids were not adults. He did not think this lifestyle should be condoned by the public schools.
Even if she had an agenda, it’s the school’s fault for making it an issue.
If you are openly holding a heterosexual-only prom on public school grounds...you are begging to be sued. The school handled it wrong. They should have compromised with the girl. They should have told her she can go with her friend as long as they dont make a scene or wear outrageous attire.
That way if it did go to court, the school can claim they were not discriminating and were allowing her to attend. The fact that they allegedly told her she would be thrown out if seen with the other girl...that would be grounds of outright discrimination.
No, we should get rid of the politicians who never visit a public school but make decisions about what teachers and students must do in the public school.
I’d say it is a bit of both plus the media, remember Maddona and Britney..
It has become mainstream we have TV shows, movie’s all encouraging and saying it is normal and cool..
So while they think it is ok the guys are giving them a little nudge in that direction..
They're not; like marriage they're reserved for members of the opposite sex (if she wanted to be around girls, have her lose 100 lbs and join a girl athletic team).
Once you let a couple of lesbo's in and they start up their lip locking dog and pony show, try and stop it (HATE CRIME! HATE CRIME!).
Homosexuals don't give a rats arse about American institutions, they just want to get in them so they can RUIN them.
Well, you know those racist, Bible-thumping Mississippians. Too bad there aren’t any Black people down there to liberalize social attitudes! [/sarcasm]
Interesting, was not aware that proms are just like marriage. Could you please tell me which states have a constitutional amendment banning same sex prom dates.
Yeah, it works something like this:
You find a member of the OPPOSITE sex that you find intellectually attractive. Because you find their intellect attractive, you usually find them to be physically attractive as well. The boy usually asks the girl out on a "date"; let's call this date "the prom". After hitting it off on numerous dates, things start to develope. One things leads to another, and before you know it, the boy (who has now turned into a man) asks the girl (who has now turned into a woman) for her hand in holy matrimony. Next comes the nucleus of society: the nuclear family. If you need to know how that happens, I suggest you go back to 9th grade biology class. (in other words, if said little whiiiiiny lesbo's didn't have a mommy and daddy with separate reproductive organs, they wouldn't be around to whiiiiine about not being able to go to the prom).
Could you please tell me which states have a constitutional amendment banning same sex prom dates.
How about I go even further and give you the Supreme Authority's (i.e. the One who created and rules the universe, the world, all nations, and those states that are in those nations) view on same sex prom dates: It's an abomination (detestable, vile).
If you take the "b" and "a" and "n" out of abomination, I'm thinking God doesn't approve of same sex relationships.
Now the atheist Libertarian Party and their allies over at the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender so-called "community" are a whole different story.
Have you seen the comment section of this article?!? SOMEBODY’S obviously upset over all of this foolishness!

I attended my senior prom with my girlfriend and that night we explored the world of hetrosexual fornication and of course we were not married.
So, as that act also an abomination or would it only have been an abomination if we were of the same sex?
Wow. And I thought Free Republic had some hugh threads.
Proud of who you are??? You are a sexual deviant, sweetheart. You choose to be w/another girl. It’s not like being Black,Jewish,Asian, etc.
While sex outside of marriage with what's her name (please tell me you at least learned her name before you had sex with her) is indeed against God's laws, it's not one of the four sins that cry out to Heaven for vengeance (sodomy and murder are two of them; if you're pro abortion, I guess that means you defend not only one, but two abominable sins).
I know quite a bit about the homosexual lifestyle from several sources: Scripture, secular and Christian publications, and of course living in "San FranSWISHco North".
Tell me trumandogz, why do you defend it like you do? Has a friend or loved one chosen that lifestyle?
I knew girls who went to the Prom in a group.
Is this the equivalent of polygamy?
Well, thank you Sir for finding me Not Guilty of an "abomination" for that premarital prom night sex with Becky Sue back in the 1980's. And as for those other things, I am stringly Pro-Life, I have never murdred and I have never had gay sex.
So, thanks to You, I know that I am in the clear of any an all abominations and and very imporessed that one with such surpreme authority would reply to my posts.
You might be in the minority here, but in my opinion, that doesn't make you wrong.
It appears that you are a bit confused over who is the ultimate judge when it comes to sin (I'll give you a hint, it's not me). It also appears that you like to "pick and choose" which of God's laws you want to abide by (or in this case, defend a lifestyle that God says is an abomination). It's obvious that you're angry with me for acknowledging that their is an "ultimate truth", and God is the ONLY ONE that decides that.
By the way, you didn't answer my earlier question: Why do you defend the homosexual lifestyle like you do?
