Teen gets 15 life sentences for role in Apollo Beach rapes

TAMPA - A Wimauma 15-year-old was sentenced to 15 life sentences today for his part in the robbery, abduction and rape of two Apollo Beach waitresses in August 2008.

Circuit Judge Chet A. Tharpe meted out one life sentence for each year of Jose Walle's age, saying he had no intention of the teen ever leaving prison.

"This is one of the most disturbing cases I have ever come across," Tharpe said while passing sentence.

He said it didn't matter that Walle was only 13 when he held a gun on the women during the attack. Walle and two men were charged in the incident.

"If he is not stopped, he is going to do it again, and quite frankly I'm not willing to take that chance," Tharpe said. "It is my intention that you never ever walk the streets of our community again as a free man."

If only he had been sentenced to life at 13, he wouldn’t have been able to rape these women. He was 13 when he did it, 15 by the time he got sentenced.

At some point, you have to tell the mother of a rapist dirtbag, “No. You’re kid is a scumbag and deserves to rot in prison.”

It wasn’t too young to rape these women. Jail isn’t about rehab its about punishment and keeping the animals off the street.

The law has two functions, punitive and protective. While your statement applies to the punitive part it is clear that the judge was concerned with the protective element. Since the perp committed the crime twice, showed no remorse, and would likely do it again if freed, it is never too soon for a life sentence. It is not about punishing the criminal at this point, but about ensuring that there will be no more victims.
