I tend to find that, outside of the border counties, third generation Hispanics who use Spanish as their primary language is very rare. Even in the second generation, English is generally used among peers, while using Spanish when talking with elders.

This, btw, is what I have observed from living amongst Colombians in Miami, Mexicans in Chicago, and every Latino nationality imaginable here in New York.

That has been true, but it seems that those things are changing somewhat the last 10 years or so.
