This has got to be child abuse. A special education student running the schools?
Detriot school board president Otis Mathis cant write in English. The man charged with educating the last 90,000 school kids left in the disappearing city cant express himself in a simple Email.
Need proof?
Grab a red pencil and read this recent Email written by Mr. Mathis. If you saw Sundays Free Press that shown Robert Bobb the emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, move Mark Twain to Boynton which have three times the number seats then students and was one of the reasons he gave for closing school to many empty seats.
His acknowledgement of difficulty composing a clearly written English paragraph is an understatement.
[H]is communication issues.
Mathis who was placed in a special education program in the fourth grade is a great example of Detroits refusal to recognize reality. Last January he was elected president of the school board by a margin of 10 to 1 over a University of Michigan academic officer.
That his graduation from Wayne State University was held up for TEN years because he couldnt pass the required English proficiency test and had a 1.8 gpa in high school meant nothing. Mathis shouldnt be able to teach third grade classes, let alone become the president of an entire school system. This outrage wouldnt be tolerated anywhere else in America.
Damned either way
His colleagues call Mathis a good guy whose leadership skills are more important than his lack of qualifications. Nevertheless, herein lays the problem of trying to fix the Detroit school system. Anyone bright enough to be able to do the job is too bright to take the job.
Since somebody anybody- must be in the slot, for Detroit a former special education student will do.

He just needs a good secretary who can proof his writing. He may be really smart but unable to express his ideas in writing. Special education includes all types of people, including people with dyslexia. People with dyslexia usually have higher than average IQ but are unable to process the sound/symbol connection and may have problems with written expression. I’m not saying he has dyslexia, but there are disabilities that do not effect IQ that may create deficits in the ability to write.
“I was elected to lead, not to read.”
I go with typo here instead of grammar. I, as other Freepers, occasionally have a typo in my posts. The other day I meant to post “fried chicken” but I posted “friend chicken” instead. I’m still clucking about it.
My 4th grade teacher made Attila look like a Cub Scout. Every week we would write 20 words five times, Monday thru Friday. It wouldn't fit today's mores, but it was sure effective for me.
Back then, computers were the size of classrooms, so we learned how to compute using pencil/paper and/or slide rules. 40+ years later, I remind my kids how remarkable that which NASA accomplished: sent men to the moon and back using not much more than slide rules.
Those are hugh and series errors, my FRiend.
NASA had computers in the 1960s that took up the space of a football field. At the research center at Columbia, under Robert Jastrow.
Hey, the guy at least made it into fourth grade. I think that's above average, for Detroit.
“Detriot school board president Otis Mathis cant write in English.”
“Coach needs to check his spelling before posting a missive against someone who cannot write properly.”
Oh PLEASE, SoFloFreeper!
The story from Detroit is one of political correctness in the area of “promoting diversity” taken to a level of negligent absurdity.
It is no wonder that the last four or five decades of Detroit’s history has seen the population continue to pick up and leave.
I saw an article that said there is a total land area of vacant houses and unoccupied residential lots in Detroit equal to 40 square miles.

KCMO schools have been in the toilet for years, my mother teaches in private schools because she refuses to teach in the KCSD.
“apposite”
Ya’ learn something every day.
