Citibank exposes 600,000 customers' Social Security numbers

Ralph Remakel received a Citibank letter postmarked Feb. 16 that notified him of a recent Citibank error. It turns out he wasn't the only one.

In late January, Citibank mailed year-end tax statements to 600,000 Citi customers via the U.S. Postal Service that included the customers' Social Security numbers ... on the outside of the envelope.

Citi called the mistake a "processing error."

Although the nine-digit numbers were not identified as Social Security numbers (they were printed at the lower edge of the envelope with other numbers and letters and resembled a mail routing number), Citi still reacted to the mistake. EVP and Director of Citibank Client Services Norman White sent customer notification letters to every affected Citi customer during the week of Feb. 15, apologizing for the error.

CITICORP - the gift that keeps on giving. Remember, this is Robert Ruben’s CITI, the former Clinton Treasury Secretary.

It’s actually illegal for them to even ask you for your SS number. But, you can’t get a CC without one, go fig.

Big AMEN to that!

Maybe you or some other FReeper can answer these questions for me:

When/who/how did the “credit bureaus” come into existence and have the power that they do?

When did the “credit score” become the end-all be all of a person?

I know my original SS card states on it that it is NOT to be used for identification purposes.

IT LONG OVERDUE to trust the citizens of the USA to report their own interest income on their tax returns. Citibank wouldn’t even have SSN if it wasn’t for government DISTRUST of everyone to report.

STOP all credit bureaus and credit card issuers from demanding SN numbers to process.

Are you sure ? It might make it rough for them to help the IRS illegally seize your funds without it .

I sent my $10.00 to each of the 3 credit reporting agencies recently to “FREEZE” my reports.

Hopefully I can go thru life in the near future without anyone having to do a credit check on me. Inconvenient to lift the freezes temporarily but the peace of mind supercedes this inconvenience.

Were it my bank, I’d be first in line...

I severed my last tie with them when they took TARP money. They are dead to me, and with business practices like this they will soon be dead even to those who are less finicky about dealing with sleazy companies.

Let me guess. This is an inside job where someone in IT printed the numbers onto the envelopes and harvested any number of names with social security numbers simply by writing down the name and address and SSN from random bills.

There are so MANY levels of incompetency in this: (1)the bank using the SSN as a case ID rather than an internally generated number (2)the design of the envelope—who allowed the case number to be put on the OUTSIDE of the envelope? Even if it had been an internal case number, not an SSN, who in their right mind would decide to put it on the outside??? (3) obvious lack of project supervison and review.

Personnel throughout that bank, from the CEO on down, should lose their jobs for incompetency and unsafe business practices. A class action suit might be the only thing that will make big business, esp the credit card companies, change their practices about the SSN.

“They are dead to me”

But I’ll bet your personal data and SSN was still in the database that was compromised. Account closure is no guarantee of removal of data.
