Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) on Tuesday defended his decision to change his mind on abortion when he was governor.
Romney campaigned as a pro-abortion rights candidate and maintained that position throughout much of his governorship. But the 2008 GOP presidential candidate said that he had a change of heart because of a bill that was considered that would have allowed human embryo research.
Republican and Democratic opponents of Romney used his switch on the campaign trail to paint him as a flip-flopper who has no core principles.
But Romney, who is presumed to be a 2012 presidential hopeful, said on "Imus in the Morning" broadcast by Fox Business Network:
If you change your mind on abortion, which I did when I was governor, youre going to have a lot of people not happy with you. That was certainly the case. Once you get a narrative its hard to shake it. Just recognize that its part of the game of politics.
The ex-governor later said that President Barack Obama also changed his mind when he decided to send more troops to Afghanistan:
He changed his mind and thats a good thing. As you recall, he was the most anti-war, get out no matter what guy in Iraq among all the Democratic nominees. And he won, I think in part, because of that posture. Becoming president he agreed with John McCain and President Bush and has kept our troops there. Actually having voted against the surge in Iraq, he is applying it to the surge in Afghanistan. I give him credit where he recognizes he was wrong.
Many on the left attacked Obama's decisions to send more troops to fight al-Qaeda and the Taliban and Afghanistan and many on the right hit the administration for setting a timetable for withdrawal.
Obama criticized the Iraq War on the campaign trail but said the U.S. should focus its strategy on Afghanistan.
Should Romney enter the 2012 race and Obama run for reelection, look for this argument to reemerge.
You were talking about Mitt Romney, evidently you believe that he suddenly changed to being a conservative for the 2008 primary at almost age 60.
I don’t know why you mentioned David Horowitz, he became conservative in the 1980s under President Reagan.
Mitt Romney on the other hand, whose father had been a Republican Presidential candidate, and whose mother had been a Republican Senatorial candidate renounced the Republican party in the 1980s because of President Reagan.
Well you switched topics to someone who was liberal in the past few decades so I was trying to think of some. Romney except on abortion has been a solid Conservative. The article was specifically referring to Mitt’s change on that position and one where he admits that he was Pro Choice.
” Romney except on abortion has been a solid Conservative. “
What is the atmosphere like on your planet?
Why did Romney drop his Republican registration in the 1980s in revulsion against President Reagan?
Why was Romney aggressively pro abortion for all of his adult life, why was Romney quietly doing fund raising for Planned parenthood?
Why from 1989 until he became a Republican again in 1993, did Romney only donate to liberal Democrat races around the nation and again, actually fund raise for liberal Democrat candidates against Republican opponents?
Why was Romney anti Jesse Helms, why was Romney anti-Contract with America?
Why was Romney so aggressively pro-homosexual agenda, including full homosexuality in the military?
What accounts for Romney’s uncontrollable impulse to lie about anything and everything, even unrelated to politics?
Why does Romney even want to be President? Romney has no real history in political office, he won one race and governed in a manner that you describe as the opposite of what he believed, he did so poorly that he left with a 34% approval rating and turned his seat over to the Democrats, what could be driving him to currently devote his life and fortune to being President, he clearly has no particular ideology if you are correct, of course he could have dark anti conservative, reasons if one actually looks at who he is and has been ALL of his life.
How did Mitt Romney so thoroughly conceal any conservative beliefs or impulses in his public and personal life until he started running for the 2008 primary, that is almost 60 years of living and it was during the pro life movement, the Reagan Revolution, the 1994 Republican Revolution, the gun rights fights, wars, the Clinton years, how and why was he always on the wrong side?
Byteback, I would say that Ansel12 just handed your ass to you.
Mitt RomneyCARE used improper executive authority
to impose HIS whim-of-the-day upon citzens
rather than the peoples' will as he micturated upon on the Mass. Constitution
by his improper executive authority. [The Romney Way]
"While former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney claims he did everything possible to throttle homosexual marriage in his state his campaign now saying he took "every conceivable step within the law to defend traditional marriage" several constitutional experts say that just isn't so.
"What Romney did [was] he exercised illegal legislative authority," Herb Titus said of the governor's actions after the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court released its opinion in the Goodridge case in 2003. "He was bound by what? There was no order. There wasn't even any order to the Department of Public Health to do anything."
Titus, a Harvard law graduate, was founding dean of Pat Robertson's Regent University Law School. He also worked with former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, ...
Romney's aides have told WND that after four of the seven court members reinterpreted the definition of marriage, he believed he had no choice but to direct clerks and others to change state marriage forms and begin registering same-sex couples.
Some opponents contend that with those actions, Romney did no more or less than create the first homosexual marriages recognized in the nation. And Titus agrees."
"....But the court's decision conflicts with the constitutional philosophy of three co-equal branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial, Titus said. It also violates with the Massachusetts Constitution, which states: "The power of suspending the laws, or (suspending) the execution of the laws, ought never to be exercised but by the legislature..."
And it cannot even be derived from the opinion itself, asserts the pro-family activist group Mass Resistance, which says the decision did four things:
* First, it acknowledged that the current law does not permit same-sex marriage.
"The only reasonable explanation is that the Legislature did not intend that same-sex couples be licensed to marry. We conclude, as did the judge, that G.L. c. 207 may not be construed to permit same-sex couples to marry."
* Second, it said it is NOT striking down the marriage laws (among other things, the Massachusetts Constitution forbids a court to change laws)
"Here, no one argues that striking down the marriage laws is an appropriate form of relief."
* Third, it declared that not allowing same-sex marriages is a violation of the Massachusetts Constitution.
"We declare that barring an individual from the protections, benefits, and obligations of civil marriage solely because that person would marry a person of the same sex violates the Massachusetts Constitution."
* And fourth, given that the court is not changing any laws, the SJC gave the Legislature 180 days to "take such action as it may deem appropriate."
"We vacate the summary judgment for the department. We remand this case to the Superior Court for entry of judgment consistent with this opinion. Entry of judgment shall be stayed for 180 days to permit the Legislature to take such action as it may deem appropriate in light of this opinion."
After the Legislature did nothing during the 180 days, Romney then took action "on his own," the group said.
"Gov. Romney's legal counsel issued a directive to the Justices of the Peace that they must perform same-sex marriages when requested or 'face personal liability' or be fired," the group said."
“In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” -Thomas Jefferson
I guess Thomas Jefferson was a fool then...
I’ve changed my mind about Mitt....I despise him more than I used to...more than I ever thought possible.
You ain't seen nothin' yet.
One empty suit endorses another.
Brilliant post! Thank you for that!
I thought that Romney vetoed the parts of MA Healthcare bill that included abortion plus other parts? The nearly solid Dems in the MA legislature overrode all 9 or so of his vetoes. Is that wrong?
Sorry but for a grown man in his 40s who says he feels the same as his mother and has since his youth only to have a "change of heart" at the exact time he decides he wants to be President, stretches the imagination further than mine will stretch.
Oh, and he also had a change of heart over his stance on gays, no coincidence here.
Whatever. If you like posts that read like media matters have at it. To each his own.
Yeah ‘whatever’. Use the extra large sized Band-Aid to cover that wound, I note that you’ve been unable to refute even one comma of what ansel12 had to say. That alone speaks volumes.
--------- We can merge the two and say only a fool believes a man who changes his mind in pursuit of a new elective office.
LOL ...... well said, sir.
Apparently you are not familiar with Media Matters. They use a tactic where there are so many falsehoods that it’s just not worth even starting to refute. Once someone goes down that road of cut and paste talking points that have no merit they have already lost.
No thanks McRomabee, already had my fill of “USED CARS”!
Romney except on abortion has been a solid Conservative.
I’m not media matters, something on this list that you want to refute?
Since you are willing to publicly claim “Romney except on abortion has been a solid Conservative”, then you must have lots to say to me about posting “false” information about this life long, “rock solid conservative”.
