NEW YORK (AP) -- Samsung and Panasonic will start selling 3-D TVs in U.S. stores this week, inaugurating what TV makers hope is the era of 3-D viewing in the living room.
Samsung Electronics Co. announced Tuesday that it is selling two 3-D sets. Combined with the required glasses and a 3-D Blu-ray player, the prices start at about $3,000 for a 46-inch screen.
Panasonic Corp. has said it will sell its first 3-D set Wednesday.
The push into the living room comes as moviegoers have shown considerable enthusiasm for the latest wave of 3-D fare in the theater. This weekend, "Alice in Wonderland" grossed an estimated $116.2 million at the box office, beating the first-weekend receipts of "Avatar," the winter's 3-D blockbuster.
Although it's clear that 3-D sets for the home will appeal to technology and home-theater enthusiasts, it remains to be seen if the TVs will entice regular consumers to spend $500 or more above the price of a comparably sized standard TV and Blu-ray player.
The 3-D effect requires viewers to wear relatively bulky glasses that need to be recharged occasionally. They're not like the cheap throwaways that have been used in theaters since the 1950s. When you're wearing these 3-D TV glasses, room lights and computer screens may look like they're flickering, making it difficult to combine 3-D viewing with other household activities.

Finally!
A technology I have no interest in!
The public at large will not spend money on this technology.
I dunno, I don’t see this getting any legs.
Can you imagine watching a news conference and seeing Helen Thomas in 3-D?
I doubt that I would consider buying a 3D set for same price but if sports were in 3D, might be a different decision.
I'm gong to have to see one in Fairbanks once our road opens in May and we get into town. I also remember something about a lazer Mitsub coming out. Supposed to put that 82 diamond series to shame, but 6 gran. To me, 3 gran is what I'll spend; can wait until it comes down to that price.
Bottom line is when I watch hockey, whatever TV gives me the best picture is the one I set my sights on.

LOL...wanna get married?
Heh, only kidding. My wife and I just had one of the few fights of our marriage about three weeks ago, over...
...a home theater system...of all things. (Granted, most people wouldn’t characterize it as a fight, but...that is just us)
It is funny, I don’t even watch television. At all. She watches all the television, though I do watch a lot of movies. Last summer, our 15 year old television died.
Since then, we have been using a little 18 inch LCD as our television, and have been watching movies together on my laptop.
She asked me how much it would take to get a nice system, soooo....I told her $5000. She told me to budget $5000 do research, and get some quotes.
Which I dutifully did.
But I took too long. I researched for about two months (because I didn’t know jacksquat about LCD, Plasma, HDMI or anything else, so I had to learn) and just as I was ready to pull the trigger and give her the quote, she said (for an unknown reason) “Let’s hold off for now.”
Well...okay.
Then we had another talk in January, and she said to get two quotes, one for $3000 and one for $5000. Which I did (I want to replace all of our stuff with HDMI capable, get a 55-60 inch unit, etc)
I had decided to get a Samsung, and when I took her over to see the actual unit, she was very negative about everything associated with it, which puzzled me completely.
We had words (nothing bad...to an observer, we just looked like we were discussing cat barf on the rug or something, I am sure) but for us, we don’t often go there.
LOL...needless to say, I wrote her a letter, because she deals better with having time to read and absorb, and I can convey myself better in that medium too, and left it for her.
When I came home that night, she was gone, and there was a note with a check from her personal account with instructions to buy whatever I wanted with it...and it was an enormous amount of money, more than twice what I had even considered spending on a home theater system.
Needless to say, I tore that check up so fast my hands must have been a blur. I looked at it for a minute, wondering “Is this for real?” as visons of 80” top of the line whatevers drifted in front of my eyes...
Then I came to my senses and realized that taking that money would have been the equivalent of putting a gun to the head of my marriage and pulling the trigger. (This was accompanied by the sound of a large population of husbands out there groaning, slapping their foreheads with their hands, and wondering how someone like me has made it this far in life without stepping in front of a bus...)
Heck. I just realized she has her own schedule she is working on, and she just wasn’t ready for it. And I can continue to watch movies on my laptop until she is...:)
I realized just how stupid it was to make an issue of something like that, considering that I simply don’t watch television at all.
I agree, but I am not so negative on people who can afford it and want it. I say power to them...it is the consumer desire that has driven the prices of consumer electronics down while driving capability up, and that has had spinoffs into a huge number of areas including both medical and military.
But, as you said, if someone cannot make payments to even a SINGLE creditor, no way should they be buying anything new unless it is clothes to replace worn ones or tires for a car.
I am appalled at some of the people that are trotted out by the media to show how evil the mortgage companies or health insurance companies are. These ‘victims’ have two new cars, live in a house way above their means, they have cable, Internet, top of the line cellphones or iPhones for everyone in the family including the six year old kid, and so on.
It bothers me, because there are plenty of people who really are hurting, and they trot out these.
That said, I don’t have a problem with people and their toys. If they can afford it and want it...they should buy it.
They will be, very shortly. This isn't a half-hearted technology gimmick. New cameras, new display tech, new content is all being created to take advantage of 3D. It sounds odd now, but it's being pushed very hard, and a LOT is being invested into it.
Early adopters will drive the prices down and then the rest of us mere mortals can partake fairly cheaply, as is usually the case.
a gimick and waste of money.
this is just polarized shifting. How is this any different than the regular TV showing red/blue 3d?
Most 3d movies are a waste of extra money.
Alice was 100% a waste of movie theater time.
I thought 3d was a scam to try and limit piracy.
I wonder what those second city TV comedians have to say about the new 3d....
early adopters= early suckers
these tv’s come with ONE SET of the glasses...why ONE SET?
Oh My. Bless your heart. My husband loves to save, save and save some more. Now that is a good thing but geez I’d like to enjoy life a little bit too. At the time, I told him with that kind of thinking we wouldn’t be a 4 computer household + laptop IF we had kept waiting for the next best model or price drop. What could he say? LOL I have a few shows I watch weekly, watch & listen to way too much FOX News according to my kids and my husband, but I am well informed thanks to this forum and FOX. :)
I also did ALL the research myself, comparison shopping, was able to get a high end retailer to match Sears price on a higher end unit Sears didn’t even have in stock at the time etc. etc. It was a Mitsubishi 65” and I think this was back in 2003 or maybe ‘04. Picked out all the best deals on receiver, DVD player at the time with the Faroudja’s (sp?) chip, you name it . . . I am a very good shopper :) LOL with many years of experience. He and the kids have thoroughly enjoyed this purchase . . . Netflix, Dish, and of course the Wii. But much to my surprise this left ME, the person who orchestrated this wonderful home theater set-up to the bedroom watching an OLD 26” Magnavox. This was just WRONG. I let this go on for maybe 2 years . . . . I’m just not a video gaming girl and could only take so much Nickelodeon etc. etc. . . . so again, did my research, price comparisons and said enough is enough and finally pulled the trigger one Mother’s Day weekend in 2006, TIMING IS EVERYTHING, :) and bought a wonderful Sony 50” SXRD with a beautiful picture that sits on a old cedar chest a few feet away from the foot of my bed. Voila, it is Good To Be Queen, just kidding, but I do love my TV and coffee with FOX in the morning or a glass of wine at night~!!!!
I found back then, with the first HDTV, a great forum, I don’t think it receives near the traffic it use to and I think due to many people not “thanking” the mostly guys for their help and expertise, they aren’t quite as helpful as they use to be. They have a separate board for each of the various components of a system, each brand, cables, gaming you name it. etc. etc. Just the history would provide you with much information when you are ready to try again.

Seems many of the topics now have some spam which they use to clean up immediately . . . but you might find some helpful information.
Me and my husband don’t ever fight per se either. I just keep at my bean counter thing with the numbers & savings (girl math) and whatever other rationalizations are necessary until he surrenders. :)
We’re not early adopters but then we’re not last on the train either. :) At least IF the decision is up to me, my husband though is a wait forever type though. You’d think not being an engineer and a guy. LOL
Oh I have no issue with people spending on life’s luxuries, WITH CASH. I for years lived the credit lie, buying overpriced clothes, TVs, and (f)leasing cars. We also used to eat out twice a week. I was miserable, living on that treadmill, having $2002 in my savings account and one paycheck away from a calamity. Last November, I went with a friend to a dealers auction, I went with 15k cash to spend. I got a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 for $12,200(Note to you buying from a car dealer you are getting raped). It felt so good to write a personal check for the car to my friend who had to purchase it for me. Nice to avoid the fionace manager, the sleazy dealer, the phone calls if you are 1 day late on a payment. I choose not to play, stay outside the credit system. I don’t finance, I own.
Let's make a $1 bet right now. You say the tech catches on. I say NO WAY it catches on. We can decide on a timeframe for the bet. How long do you think it will be before the outcome is obvious? I think it will be obvious in two years that this was one of the silliest ideas yet by the consumer electronics industry.

Thanks for the tip.
You must be referencing graphic productions. That does seem that it would be an incredible amount of work. Still, with the graphic programs out there today, CAD or some artistically focused equivalent must make it somewhat less painful to produce. Doesn’t it?
With a CAD type of product, you could view or record one object from two perspectives.
Same thing ~ you need people with 3-D capability.
You've noticed, though, that ADVERTISING is moving quickly to graphics.
Thanks for the additional comments. I understand where you are coming from, ‘thinking in 3D’. I would think 3D would be an amazing platform for a sales campaign too.
You and I are pretty much on the same page...
Excellent! Thank you for that link-I will check it out when I get home...
