I'm as much a geek as the next guy, and I realize that there are a lot of advantages (when they work) of making the controls fully electronic. Works great in aviation.
But these drive-by-wire systems make me more than a bit cautious. I'd like to see hardware redundancy as well as software redundancy and I don't think that's being designed into these systems yet. Electronics are great, but a vehicle, by it's very nature, is a mechanical device in an often extreme environment. Stuff happens.
Worse, there's much talk of using the same type of control systems on steering in the future. Yikes!

Yes, that steering is certainly a concern. What happens if you get scraped at 65 mph, and your electronics get damaged? Good luck coming to a reasonable stop.
