Space Shuttle Debate Goes Ballistic
InformationWeek ^ | March 8, 2010 | Paul McDougall

President Obama vowed to defend his plan to mothball NASA's shuttle fleet as the debate over the spacecraft's future turned partisan. The White House said Obama would explain to the country why he believes NASA would get more bang for its space buck by scrapping the shuttle and turning rocket launches over to private contractors in an address slated for April 15th. The shuttle program is slated to end later this year. Republican Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, of Texas, last week slammed Obama's agenda, claiming it would cause the U.S. to take a back seat to other countries in terms of space research and exploration.

Bailey also said the shuttle program shouldn't be scrapped until a replacement vehicle is ready.

Maybe if we paint the shuttle all black with a big red crescent or red sickle on it, maybe he’ll go for it. We can rename it “America’s National Debt” and watch it, too, launch into outer space.

Typical Liberal thinks that the private sector can do a better job than the Government.

Funny. For a guy that’s so into government, he seems dead set against one of the few things government has done well at times.

“Typical Liberal thinks that the private sector can do a better job than the Government.”

Why does Obama want to take health care from the private sector and give the space program to the private sector? He says the private sector can do space cheaper even though they have no record established in space launches. The guy is a ball of contradictions, and has no business even being the leader of the county dog catchers, must less president of the United States.

I agree to an extent . He is certainly following the Marxist handbook . I do feel he is just the puppet though . They are screwing up badly in that he grossly underestimated the American public. He’s ego will be his downfall eventually

Wow. He is actually doing something sensible for change. Feels weird. For the Shuttle fetishists out there, the Shuttle really hasn't done much for space science or space exploration or utilization. It is overly complex and expensive and represents the triumph of hope over experience.

I am okay with turning part of NASA over to private industry. They can do it better, faster and cheaper. But, let’s use the remnants of NASA to build a defense system to shield us from incoming nukes.
