Several members of my family live/lived in California, and as I said, I lived there from 1955 (birthdate)until 1962 or maybe 63. I had forgotten that I actually moved in 63, because my brother was born in 61. We moved when he was two years old. My Mom came from Nev., Dad from Utah, then they got married in Nev. and moved to Cali., because he was in the Marines and was stationed there after their marriage.
They started out in Twenty-nine Palms, and then went to Oceanside. That’s when that (once)little Marine training center out in the desert was born and is even bigger than Camp Pendleton now, from what I’ve learned! Then after they left Cali., they went to Maryland, as he was stationed in D.C..
Anyway, I still have some relatives there. Some came over from the the French Basque Country, through Ellis Isl., then to Calif. and Nev. All of those old folks are gone now, of course, and most the ones from my Mom and Dad’s generation are gone. There are still some cousins left, though.
Yes, he was the mayor of Carmel at one time.
As to my own history in California, I lived there for 44 years, altogether. The dirt of that place is in every cell of my body, but I can't see myself ever moving back. By the time California turns itself around, I'll probably have grand children growing up in Texas.
