Original title: Palin: I snuck across Canadanian border for healthcare By Eric Zimmermann - 03/08/10 11:33 AM ET

Sarah Palin's family used to "hustle" across the Canadian border to get healthcare, the former Alaska Governor said this weekend.

In a speech in Calgary, Palin called it "ironic" that while growing up in a small Alaskan town near the Canadian border, her family used to sneak across to take advantage of the Canadian healthcare system.

"We used to hustle over the border for health care we received in Canada," she said, according to Medicine Hat News (via Dave Weigel.) "And I think now, isn't that ironic."

It's ironic, of course, because Palin and other Republicans have argued that Democratic healthcare reform will put the U.S. on the path towards Canada's "socialized" healthcare system.

I don’t think Canada ever covered the rest of the worlds citizens for free. I don’t think any country has ever done that. I don’t think they could afford that.

Americans would be swarming over the border for the freebies if that were true.

I know that Britain’s health care was free to Soviet citizens as the Soviet health care was free for British citizens.

The Klondike Gold Rush is a truly amazing historical story - the hardships so many men went through in the hopes of getting somewhere during economic hard times.

Image of men toiling packs up to the Chilkoot Pass to build their one-year stash of goods in order to be able to enter Canada:

IT is a similar distance to Juneau from Skagway True, but Juneau has no road or rail links to the rest of the state.

If you get the directions from Bing maps, it takes 7hrs 42mins to get to Juneau and 2hrs 35mins to get to Whitehorse. Which would you choose if you had a child with a bad burn?

You were saying ...

Give me a link to my statement that disagrees with your post #199

Here's your statement (Post #47) ...

This is a BOGUS and totally UNSUBSTANTIATED story that only far-leftist extremists will believe.

And that's the one of which I said in Post #288 ...

It's that your statement (that I was responding to) was not sufficient to refute the idea presented.

Your mere opinion is not going to do anything. However, if you had accompanied that with the actual quote of Sarah Palin, had explained the transportation problems, had explained that there is more of a connection with Whitehorse than there is with Juneau, and that it's either by plane or ferry that one has to get over to Juneau -- then your "opinion" would be backed up with some detailed facts (and there are even more facts to be presented in this situation, too but I'm not going into all of them).

As I said, it's not sufficient to refute the idea presented, as it stands.

And you have to wait for the ferry to get to Juneau, whereas you can drive to Whitehorse.

No brainer.

I just checked, it's 2+ hours from Skagway to Whitehorse, over 7 hours to Juneau, and you apparently have to take ferry for most of that, even today. 3 hours of the trip is on the Ferry. Trip might be longer depending on the ferry schedule.

I'd go to Canada too.

It’s a truly amazing episode of American history and especially worth pursuing if its in your family tree.

I doubt the people of any nation enjoy paying for health services to those of other nations. Nonetheless, the US taxpayer does through foreign aid, and at home via the emergency room.

>> I know that Britain’s health care was free to Soviet citizens as the Soviet health care was free for British citizens.

Exactly the problem - it creates a vacuum.

Regarding Palin’s statement, neither of us defended the so-called virtues of Socialized medicine.

What I figured. It’s ironic because Canada had health care *worth* “sneaking” over the border to get. Course you had to pay for it in those days, or your private insurance did.

I am just pointing out that she couldn’t take advantage of Canada’s free health care, because as an American citizen it wouldn’t be free for her.

That’s in addition to the fact that Canada’s health care system was just being put into effect at the time.

And the fact that she had nothing to say about where her parents went for health care.

I don't believe that Sarah said this. I read her book, and she's never lived close enough to the Canadian border to have "snuck over".

Yes she did. They lived in Skagway, which is no more than 30 miles from the border and only a 100 or so from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory,... and you can drive to it in just over 2 hours, whereas getting to Juneau, the nearest Alaskan city of any size, requires a 3 hour ferry trip, for a total trip of 7+ hours, not counting waiting for the ferry.

I misspote, it’s 89 miles on the ferry, which I misread as 89 minutes. I imagine its more like 5 hours on the ferry, probably more, since it appears to make a stop at Tanani early on in the voyage. The total road milage is only 14 miles, with 89 miles on the ferry. So that would mean 1/2 hour driving, more or less and 7 hours and 15 minutes on the ferry. Plus wait time for the ferry.

Thanks for the pings. Been out of pocket all day, get back, fire up the PC and see this crappy thread...LOL.

Let's see, as I understand it...Sarah's family in Skagway (population 800) when they needed certain medical care, took a 2 hr. drive to Whitehorse instead of a 7 hr. trip to Juneau. So Sarah, age 5, is a hypocrite. Do I have this right?

Next time I may stay away longer...LOL.

You were the “pingee” being on the original list (I include those who are included by someone else in the post). You responded and I traced the links back to that post... and that’s the way the crow flies... :-)

To explain it further to you... this is the name list on that post “Blue Jays; dfwgator; tubebender” — the first one is always the person who wrote it... the second and third are always the “pingees”...

I’ve seen this many times... in that the “pingees” think that they are the ones who the comment is for... they are on there because the original poster had you on there... :-)
