CA Gubernatorial hopeful Poizner, accused of flip-flopping, steers hard to the right
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 7 March 2010 | Ken McLaughlin

When Republican Steve Poizner ran against Ira Ruskin in a heavily Democratic state Assembly district in 2004, Poizner assured voters he was against the war in Iraq, was 100 percent pro-choice and would stand up to "Republican Party bosses.'' But six years after narrowly losing that Peninsula race to the liberal Ruskin, Poizner — who now wants to be governor — is painting himself as the only "true conservative'' in the GOP primary.

As California Republicans head to Santa Clara this week for their spring convention, Poizner's new battle plan puts him in a unique position among the three gubernatorial contenders because both his GOP rival, Meg Whitman, and Democrat Jerry Brown have veered toward the political center. In making his strategy clear this past week, Poizner said he'll do everything possible to prevent the "coronation'' of the "extreme liberal'' Whitman, the former eBay chief. (SNIP)

Consider that in May 2004 Poizner told a Mercury News reporter: "The right wing of the Republican Party does not represent me.'' And during a Comcast debate five months later, he accused Ruskin and his consultants of trying "to confuse people'' and "make people believe that I'm not really a moderate Republican."

Alissa Shaw, director of Planned Parenthood Advocates Mar Monte, said the organization decided not to endorse either Ruskin or Poizner in 2004 because "we had the best of both worlds — two candidates who returned 100 percent pro-choice questionnaires.'' To get that high a rating, a candidate must support public funding of abortions, oppose parental consent laws and back a woman's right to choose the abortion method most likely to preserve her health, including so-called partial-birth abortion.

Today, Poizner is attacking Whitman for not wanting to overturn a 1981 state Supreme Court decision requiring public funding of abortions...

I don’t know anything about the issue, but I sure wouldn’t be looking for any information about it from the merky news...

What do we have so far running for Governor? Meg “Ahnold in a dress” Whitman, Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown, and Poizner are all that I know of.

Prayers for California.

Granted, but living her where Poizner ran in 2004 and seeing how he ran his first campaign, I don't dispute the Murky News' accounts here. Poizner ran as the anti-conservative candidate, and now he's running as the conservative candidate. He's a phony running against another phony (Meg Whitman) for the opportunity to run against Moonbeam (a.k.a., Jerry Brown).

We are sooooo screwed.

As filing is still open, it's hard to know who the alternative are. Those I know about are: little-known Republican Ken Miller and third party candidate Chelene Nightingale.

Thanks. We'll need all the prayers we can get.

Likewise. They're a cancer in the political body.

Unfortunately, I think they are right about Poizner.

I have come to determine that the goal of the TEA Party is to take the GOP back from the progressives, who are nothing by socialists and have come dangerously close to completing one of the Communist Goals of 1963: Infiltrate and take over one or BOTH of the political parties in the US.

I just checked out the Howard Jarvis site and they are behind Whitman. They have some great talking points about moonbeam and Poizner, and they state why Whitman is the best choice.

“Thanks. We’ll need all the prayers we can get.”

Yes, I too am from California. Been through “Moonbeam” already, and don’t want to go there again.

We need a complete diaper rinseout in the bowl, and scalding hot wash in Sacramento to clean out the $tuff, and the $mell of the Leftist butts that have occupied those seats for too long.

No Whitman, and NO Jerry Brown. We have to do better than that.

I see commercials for Poizner all the time here. I had no clue who he even was, but he paints himself as the only true Conservative in the race, that he is against illegal immigration and is for deporting all those who are here illegally.

And Tom McClintock backs Steve Poizner.

As much as I respect Tom McClintock and the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, I don’t believe McClintock nor the HJTA should be excited about either candidate and would have been better served to give no endorsement.

Poizner’s saying all the red-meat conservative points right now, but he just comes across like Mitt Romney as a born-again Conservative. It’s up to the people to decide if the conservative conversion is real or fake.

I didn’t know that McClintock had backed Poizner. That’s disappointing to know.

That will last only until the election. He will then say it’s cheaper to pay to bring their families here than it is to round them up and send them home. He is a big spending, pro-choice, anti-war RINO only marginally better than Whitman. We sadly need another option and fast.

And it isn't any wonder when good conservatives get stabbed in the back so often, it's like what's the point in even trying? The modern Oakland Raiders look like a cohesive unit in comparison to the CAGOP.
