Democrats are using the nuclear option to try to ram their government takeover of health care through the Senate. The fate of that legislation may come down to a dozen or so members of the House of Representatives opposed to government-funded abortions. Right now, the vote in the House couldn't be more closely divided.
The original version of the bill passed the House in November by a narrow 220 to 215 margin. Since then, three Democratic supporters have left Congress through retirement or death. A fourth, Rep. Eric Massa, New York Democrat, is reportedly resigning today because of charges that he sexually harassed a junior male staffer. The lone Republican who supported the bill has seen the light and switched his vote. All told, if no one else switches votes, the vote count stands at215 in favor and 216 against.

In the meantime, Rep. Jim Matheson, Utah Democrat, switched from being against the bill to undecided. But don't worry, the congressman and the White House assure us that Mr. Matheson's flip-flop has nothing to do with the almost simultaneous announcement that President Obama was nominating Mr. Matheson's brother to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals.

well, people have gone to war for less. The next few years are really going to be a challenge if this passes and it isn’t going to be pleasant at all I fear. Conservatives should have gotten off their rears a long time ago and I include myself in that. Thank goodness for the tea party that has enough guts to get people together in a grass roots effort. Amen to that, I couldn’t agree more. Your comment on the tea parties is right on. They’ve not only brought people together that are active but it’s gotten people active that were just sitting by and watching. The libs are scared of the movement and will do most anything to impede it.
It really is sad when a fairly large part of the population are only out to get what they can from the government and rely on that government to take care of them. It will be a tough hill to climb to get those people back on the productive side of things, tough but not impossible.
They may not be able to reverse it on the face of it. But, come 2015 or so, no one will be able to find a way to pay for it, and every other entitlement without monetizing our growing debt. What then, is the end game?
There will be a culmination of what we are seeing the beginning of now - a revolt against the overwhelming tax burden of the federal government that outweighs the benefits; against the loss of freedom that outweighs the security. When that happens the government will be forced to begin shedding it accumulated prized possessions. Forced to choose between Social Security, Medicare and Obamacare, what do you think will be chosen first?
Correct. Defeat Obamacare, and the whole question goes away, of forcing conscientious Christian doctors and church-run hospitals to perform, and Christian voters to fund, government-"approved" abortions.
As people like Mona Charen keep pointing out, government control of healthcare delivery, either directly or through control of payments, is "ball game".
That's because they're a) ideologues and b) totalitarian ideologues. The thing has to be just right, and 100% to their specification. Their eggs have to be over medium, not over easy, and they have to have four eggs not three or two -- and toast. There must be toast.
Americans aren't really amenable to that kind of thinking, but they're trying to train their 'Rat swarms to think like Eastern Europeans 30 years ago.
They're deliberately creating fiscal straits, as a peg for tighter controls and more demands.
