Obama’s Message Maven Finds Fingers Pointing at Him (NY Times: Sympathy for the Axelrod)
The New York Times ^ | Saturday, March 6, 2010 | Mark Leibovich

SNIP

In a lengthy interview in his office on Wednesday, Mr. Axelrod was often defiant, saying he did not give a “flying” expletive “about what the peanut gallery thinks” and did not live for the approval “of the political community.” He denounced the “rampant lack of responsibility” of people in Washington who refuse to solve problems, and cited the difficulty of trying to communicate through what he calls “the dirty filter” of a city suffused with the “every day is Election Day sort of mentality.”

SNIP

Mr. Axelrod’s friends worry about the toll of his job — citing his diet (cold-cut-enriched), his weight (20 pounds heavier than at the start of the presidential campaign), sleep deprivation (five fitful hours a night), separation from family (most back home in Chicago) and the fact that at 55, he is considerably older than many of the wunderkind workaholics of the West Wing. He wakes at 6 in his rented condominium just blocks from the White House and typically returns around 11.

SNIP

Sitting at his desk next door to the Oval Office last week, he was tearing into a five-inch corned beef sandwich on rye with a Flintstone-size turkey drumstick waiting on deck. “I am the poster child for the president’s obesity program,” he said.

A few minutes later, Mr. Obama walked in unannounced, scattering two aides like startled pigeons. “Hey,” Mr. Axelrod said by way of greeting (no “sir” or “Mr. President.”) Mr. Obama surveyed the spread on Mr. Axelrod’s desk with a slight smirk.

“What is this, King Arthur’s court?” he asked, then pulled Mr. Axelrod aside to talk about a health care speech he was about to deliver.

The Washington Post has been publishing pro-Rahm Emanuel stories recently, so Axelrod is fighting back with this sympathetic piece in the New York Times. I'm sure the casual, disrepectful way he treats the president, and Obama's acceptance of it, will go over real well.

Obama is learning all his diplomacy from Axelrod.

Axelrod, Rahm and Plouffe are nasty Chicago thugs. They do the political kneecapping for Obama. May they receive what they practice!

“For me, the question is, why haven’t we broken through more than we have?” Mr. Axelrod said. “Why haven’t we broken through?”

The answer to that question is easy Mr. Axelrod. You HAVE broken through, it is just that the people don’t believe you when you piss all over them and tell them it is raining. The crap sandwich of health care you are trying to shove down our collective throats makes us gag. The $787 billion stimulus you claim has saved so many jobs is a joke and everyone but you and the deluded bunch at the White House know it has been a complete failure. The POTUS world apology tour has only emboldened our enemies (Iran, China, Venezuela, etc) and terrified our allies (Israel, Great Britain, Poland, Czech Republic, etc).

Everything you and your boss have touched has turned to sh!t and you wonder why your message of hope and change does not resonate anymore? Check your meds David, it may be time to get the dosage upped.

Added Mr. Gibbs: “The list of people who have to deliver bad news to the president is very small, and David is first on that list. I’m probably second.”

Things Obama doesn't want to hear:

1) Three more democrat senators just announced their retirement.

2) Nancy called. She wants another meeting.

3) You have a speech this afternoon in Oklahoma.

4) Michelle's designer just left. She wants to show you what she bought.

5) The new poll numbers are out ...

But then he shot back: “Have I succeeded in reversing a 30-year trend of skepticism and cynicism about government? I confess that I have not. Maybe next year.”

This gets to the heart of their mission. They want to undo Reagan and the belief in limited government.

The key guy in the white house considers himself a “kibitzer, not a policy guy.” That explains it...why they perfectly look like they have no clue what they’re doing.

"Have I succeeded in reversing a 30-year trend of skepticism and cynicism about government? "

As they've watched / presided over this abortion of a healthcare debacle, he asks this question. He's got to be kidding.

I can figure no other motivation for Obiecare than to assert govt. control, which in an of itself raises fears about government. That gets to your thought that Ax thought Obie could convince people to put their faith in his govt. Let me count the ways they've been proven to be untrustworthy.....too numerous to mention, but click off every agenda item for starters.

So it’s Axelrod’s fault Obama is on TV everyday? Whoever has let Obama do that is an idiot. He is overexposed.

The "peanut gallery" is the people, [really coarse characterization omitted for fear of mods]. Zero needs to tell Axelrod to apologize to all of us, or resign, or be fired. Thanks kristinn.

"The criticism of the administration’s communication strategy — leveled by impatient Democrats, gleeful Republicans, bloggers and cable chatterers — clearly stings Mr. Axelrod, as well as the circle of family, friends and fans he has acquired over three decades in politics as a consultant and, before that, a reporter for The Chicago Tribune. "

Let me give you a hint Mr. Axelrod.. your message isn't "breaking through" not because of your failure to clearly communicate it.

You fail to break through because the American people do not LIKE either your message, OR the things you are trying to do on your legislative agenda.

You aren't failing to communicate, we get, what you are saying. You seem to think that we just don't get it. Well we do get it, and WE DO NOT LIKE IT!

Hello, its not that we aren't listening, its not "If we would just listen we would see how wonderful your progressive = liberal = communist ideal are.... your wonderful socialist = progressive health care plan is;;" No. It is YOU and those around you, that don't get THIS. We know what you are doing and trying to sell us on! WE ARE NOT BUYING IT! WE DO NOT LIKE IT. WE DO NOT WANT IT. AND YOU HAVE PUSHED US FAR ENOUGH. WE DON'T WANT IT, NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU TRY TO SELL IT, OR CHANGE THE MEANINGS OF THE WORDS IN YOUR SALES PITCH!!!

WE DON'T WANT WHAT YOU ARE SELLING, THAT IS WHY YOU FAIL.

The problem isn't bloggers, or conservatives, or obstructionists.... We are the American People, and we are all those things and more. Your numbers are tanking because we don't like what you are doing. Don't just change the message, STOP DOING IT.

You didn't get sent to DC to do what YOU wanted. You got sent there to do what the VOTERS wanted, and those voters are NOT liking what you are doing. Take a hint, STOP IT. See if the numbers go up, THEN you know you are doing right by the voters. Right now you aren't.

But of course this is not going to be done or paid any attention to by those in DC. SO LETS THROW THEM ALL OUT ASAP. Vote in rep.s and senators who will deliberately vote FOR term limits for all

of congress. We will take care of OholyO in 2012.

7) I'll vote for Healthcare if you promise not to campaign for me.

8) Another Kennedy dropped out.......how does it feel to be a Camelot killer?

Financial Times DC Bureau Chief Edward Luce wrote an account about insiders who hold the keys to ObamaLand's inner most sanctum -- Rahm Emanuel, Robert Gibbs, Valerie Jarrett and David Axelrod. Luce wrote:

"At a crucial stage in the 2007 Democratic primaries, Obama rejuvenated his campaign with a barnstorming speech, which ended on a promise of what his victory would produce: "A nation healed. A world repaired. An America that believes again."

Just over a year into his tenure, America's 44th president governs a bitterly divided nation, a world increasingly hard to manage and an America that seems more disillusioned than ever with Washington's ways. What went wrong? "

" I told Daley to kneecap him if he don't shut up."

Everybody’s running to the press going “It wasn’t me!” The fact is, boys and girls, you all suck. Absolutely including your boss.
