Three Republicans fight for the GOP nomination to challenge Boxer

In their first debate, Fiorina and Campbell lash out as DeVore largely avoids the fray.

Reporting from Sacramento

The Republican candidates for U.S. Senate traded foreign policy insults in a tense first debate Friday, with businesswoman Carly Fiorina hitting former Rep. Tom Campbell for associating with supporters of terrorism and Campbell accusing Fiorina's campaign of smearing him as anti-Semitic.

"That whispering campaign, that silent slander stops today," Campbell said, his hands and voice shaking in the first minutes of the hourlong debate on "The Capitol Hour" on KTKZ-AM (1380).

Campbell called for the debate after earlier Fiorina attacks on his congressional record on Israel, including two efforts to trim economic aid to the nation, and for connections with men who later pleaded guilty to or were charged with crimes associated with terrorism.

The debate was Fiorina's first as a political candidate, and the former chief of Hewlett-Packard aggressively confronted Campbell. He shifted from the contest for governor in January and has since led in early polls in the race for the nomination to oppose Democrat Barbara Boxer in November.

"I have been very clear: I do not believe Tom Campbell is an anti-Semite and I have never called him one," Fiorina said. "I do believe Tom Campbell's record is decidedly anti-Israel and many in the Jewish community agree with me."

Just as long as one of them disposes of Boxer. I would love to see “Ma’am” crushed and humiliated.

I agree with you. I wouldn’t care if it was a three headed frog, anything would be better than Boxer.

Devore is about as well as we conservatives can expect to do here in CA, I’m afraid.

“Devore is about as well as we conservatives can expect to do here in CA, I’m afraid.”

Looks that way. We don’t need rino Fiorina. She’d be almost as bad as Boxer.

I’m prepared to take a 3d job to make sure I have sufficient funds to donate heavily to anyone running against Boxer.

At this point, it could be Zippy the Chimp & would still be a huge improvement.

I hope DeVore can get some traction; but in this case, the greater good is ridding ourselves of that despicable parasite.

Her majesty instructed her driver to take a back gate into a venue because we were at the front entrance with our signs staging a very orderly & calm rally.

Nothing and I say again Nothing would be as bad as Boxer. She is absolutely the worst of left leftists. She supports every whacko environmental scenario ever invented. She is an Obama rubber stamp. She supports every Feminist and left wing theory ever imagined and she is as stupid as a brick wall. I might have preferences who I would like to see her replaced with, but I would accept anything and I mean anything over her.

Campbell is the worst of the three. He is the only pro-abort among them. What scares me is that hte prolife vote will be split between Devore and Fiorina, allowing Campbell to slip through. He is a terribel statewide candidate.

Some pertinent facts re his electability:

In 2000, Campbell won the Republican nomination to take on Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein. Despite touting his service as a Republican representing a strongly Democratic district, he was a decided underdog against the popular Feinstein. Campbell was badly defeated, losing by over 19 points. He even lost his own district by almost 15 points. State Assemblyman Mike Honda, a Mineta protege, won Campbell’s old seat by 12 points; the Republicans have only put up nominal challengers in that district since then.

Pertinent fact re his leftism:

In 2008, Campbell wrote in Reason that he would be voting no on Proposition 8 per his Republican beliefs that “government should be limited. Government has no business making distinctions between people based on their personal lives.”

Campbell was one of the more moderate House Republicans. He was very liberal on social issues (for instance, he was a strong supporter of abortion and gay rights) while conservative on fiscal matters. This was not surprising, as Bay Area Republicans tend to be somewhat more moderate than their counterparts in the rest of California.

Campbell is an old retread who lost to DiFI by 20, giving up a safe Congressional seat that the Dems still hold. Worse than that, he is a pro-abort, pro-gay, anti-Israel zealot whose voting record, aside from economic issues, would not differ materially from Pete Stark. He comes across as a real elitist, smug and aloof.

I hope either Fiorina or Devore drops out and endorses the other to stop Campbell..

The only reason Boxer has kept getting reelected is that the Republicans have either shot themselves in the foot by nominatiing someone too fare to the right to win in California or nominating a weak candidate. If they do this again and let Boxer win, then I guess they deserve her. It is my understanding that Fiorina is the only one with the $$$$ to compete with Boxer.

I have been supporting Chuck Devore. He is going to need a lot of grass roots support if he is going to succeed. Campbell has name recognition, Fiorina has money and Chuck is the most Conservative. I don’t know if Chuck can pull it out.

You are right. Devore is the most conservative, but we are talking CALIFORNIA. The most conservative probably can’t beat Boxer. Years ago, Bruce Hersenshon was the conservative candidate that Republicans thought could beat Boxer. It didn’t happen. The pragmatic vote is Fiornia even if your heart is elsewhere. Keep your eye on the target....Boxer.

Over at National Review they have a link to a letter by Campbell offering a GOOD reference to Sami Al Arian the Tampa Bay Hamas convict. That does not sound too good to me. Not a politician makes Fiornia look better. Time for Calif. to get a big broom to sweep out all the politicans.

Republicans are in trouble because a convicted Calif. repub and his links to the guy who worked for republicans before be became a corrupt INDIAN thief.

Conservative/libertarian Hershenson came a hair's breadth from beating Boxer. He was ahead until the last week.

It was Boxer's last minute smear tactics transmitted by a willing & unquestioning media won it for her by pulling off a few percentage points of the female vote.

She is a disgusting excuse for a human being & everything that is wrong with politics in this country today.
