(Memphis 3/5/10) Chaos erupted at a Family Dollar store when a man with a knife chased customers and was shot dead.
Witnesses at the store near Delano and North Watkins say the attacker picked the wrong victim.
"He got what he deserved," says one woman. "It's as simple as that."
Police say a man with a knife raced through the parking lot just after 3:00 p.m.. Witnesses say the man chased a delivery driver and others, but was killed when he tried to lunge his knife at one driver leaving the parking lot. The driver pulled a gun and killed his attacker on the spot.
"I just seen him shoot down. I thought he was just shooting in the ground. Obviously, he was shooting the gentleman with the knife," says Byron Cook who watched the ordeal from start to finish, along with his three year-old grandson.
Witnesses say two little girls were inside the car when the attacker lunged at the driver.
"He had his two step-daughters in the car with him. So, he really was trying to look out for them when he shot him," says Brandon Jones, who says the girls appeared to be younger than ten. "Yeah, they saw everything that happened. One of them was real shaken."
Jones heard roughly six shots, then saw the man on the ground with the butcher knife still in hand. Witnesses can't make sense of the attacker's motive, but they're certain the shooting was self-defense.
"He did the right thing by taking care of his business," says Jones. "The girls are safe."
"You've got to protect yourself," says Cook. "He had his two kids in the car and they were terrified."
"Self defense," says one woman. "That's what I would have done, the same thing."

suicide by armed citizen....or so it seems.
anyway never bring a knife to a gun fight.
Never bring a knife to a gun fight! ";^)
Missed it by “” this much....heh!

A fine example of gun control. Wish we had more details. It sounds like our hero citizen employed a revolver as a life saving tool judging by the fact he discharged the life saving tool six times.’Wonder if the the rounds used to exterminate the pond scum ,someone our system has probably released from prison after a small percentage of his sentence was served, was 38 special or 357 magnum. They both have their advantages , 357 makes larger holes in convicts but 38’s are a bit more controlable where multiple holes are desired.
“the gentleman with the knife”
the gentleman? Not very gentlemanly to lunge at someone with a knife...
another law abiding citizen who didnt have time to call 911 protected himself and his family...
“But doesn’t anyone care about the knife-wielding maniac’s feelings?”
/sarcasm
probably a .44 blackhawk, just a guess.
My CCW choice is a Taraus ultra lite 38 revolver, fits my smaller hands better than my old automatic did, and with all the arthritis in my hands I got to the point I couldn’t rack it easy. This happened only about a mile from our house. Memphis is a crime nest, shootings and killings nearly every day. 12 gauge sits where we can get to it at night..after dogs and alarm go off, and dead bolts on bedroom doors are thrown.
Nice choice in weaponry
Might I suggest a change in venue may be in order?
Not possible, can’t sell the house because of the market. If we could I’d be out of here and into Tipton Co where I could get enough land to put in a small garden. SURVIVOR GARDEN is gonna be necessary under 0. I snuck in the green beans behind the azelas last year, going to do it again this year. Tomatoes went along the side.
And if those 2 don’t do the job there is the 30/30...kicks like a mule, and a 9mm Ruger in the gun safe with the extra ammo. The 22 automatic hand gun is a cute little thing...my late husband shot the head off a reared rattle snake with it.
The 9mm butt is to big for my hand, but I’m sure if it was necessary I’d manage it. I’m just the right height, all I have to do is bring it to mid chest level, point my body at the target and I’m going to be on heart center on most preps.
Bummer.
We got while the gettin was good as they say, and landed on roses.
THe down side is that in the last 15 years the local Catholics had imported a ton of Somoans, Tongan, Somolians and tons of Hmong(sp?) - from the “refugee” camps on the Thai-Vietnam border — some bad-azz gang-bangers they are.
So, as the ecomomy shrinks, Alaskan have imported welfare queens and bangers...wutta deal.
DOn’t know where to go from here - rural Nv or some isolated parts of UT I suppose.
Oh well, my problem, not yours, best of luck and hope the beans turn out well - spuds might be a good ground cover crop for you as well.....
Nice shooting!
IF I had the room I’d do so....we have a big front hill, and an even smaller steeper back hill. Not much growing space...if the crap hits the fan home owners assc. be hanged, I’ll till up that front yard! I went hungry for weeks because my first husband was stupid with money and when you only get paid once a month you have to budget and stick to it.
Any big city is chock full of the welfare queens, gangs, thugs, and non English speakers...all on welfare. Now they are branching out to rural areas.
Middle TN looks better all the time...NO state income tax, good CCW laws. Cooler summers, more winter weather, but I can live with that...Knoxville would be a good choice, kind of in between. I’ve family in the area.
