COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- After the Maryland Terrapins beat Duke, 79-72, people gathered on Route 1 to celebrate
Soon, the crowd took down a traffic sign and rocked a bus. Police in riot gear tried clearing people from the streets. Officers were on horses, others used shields to physically push people back.
Some say the police went too far, using tear gas and shooting sand bags while people ran away. Others say the response is understandable, considering the areas history.
The confrontation lasted for hours. Afterwards, people took pictures of blood on a sidewalk. A group of students said the blood was from their friend who was beaten by police.
Local bars remained open, and many students were still making their way inside, even as police pushed back.
The rioters did receive some encouragement from the schools famous alumni, including All-Pro defensive end Shawne Merriman, now with the San Diego Chargers, who tweeted, Route 1 by the university better be on fire tonight.
I’ll never understand this mentality. St. Louis has won the World Series and the Super Bowl and NEVER had riots and damage.
Stay classy Terrapins.
When everyone is drunk and celebrating and happy and in a crowd the first sign of anarchy spreads like wildfire. If we can only yell and high-five and pound beers that is all we will do but the second it looks like there is a green light to steal Tvs or start fires it happens.
“Be on fire” to me sounds like a motivational thing. Not real fire. Don’t blame this guy for the moronic and criminal behavior of those idiots.
“When everyone is drunk and celebrating and happy and in a crowd the first sign of anarchy spreads like wildfire”
Yeah but judging by the “alumni”s comment, there are some that hope for, and presumably plan for this. So I’m not so sure about the drunk-happy-anarchy thing.
“Route 1 by the university better be on fire tonight”
How could you possibly take that as anything other than literal? That is EXACTLY where the rioters attacked.
Fear the turtle
Charge him with incitement to riot.
You give the football player too much credit. Ever hear the term, “We were on fire!” “They were on fire!” I’m guessing that route is the known party location at the school. Stupid idiots for sure, but this guy wasn’t calling for the place to be literally set on fire.
Scum.
I mean, the Rutgers crowd at home gets good and boozed up, but without the hostility and obnoxiousness I saw from the drunks at Maryland. Really a surly joyless bunch.
Me either, it’s beyond stupid.
LOL!!!
Me neither. New York has won many championships (but sadly few by the NY teams I root for) and has not had rioting either.
If anything, it would make more sense to riot after losing.
Hey Dead, not all of us man!
