Desperate N.Koreans 'Riot Over Food'
Violence is growing in North Korea amid a worsening food shortage after the disastrous currency revaluation last December, according to sources in the hermit country.
One person was killed by armed guards on Feb. 16 when a group of people attempted to rob a food train at Komusan Railway Station in Puryong-gun, North Hamgyong Province, defector group North Korea Intellectuals Solidarity said. The attack came on North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's birthday after a disastrous currency reform sent food prices skyrocketing.
The train was loaded with rice imported from China, the group said. Workers, outraged over the death, attacked armed guards with ploughs and police and military were called in.
"North Koreans are angry that guards shot a worker dead for a few kilograms of rice but protesters are unlikely to get off lightly because the incident happened on Kim's birthday," the group said.
A South Korean security official would not confirm the bloodshed but said there have been reports of violence in the North due to the serious food shortage.
In a recent newsletter, South Korean activist group Good Friends said guards last month stole part of several tons of corn, which was piled Hoeryong Railyway Station in North Hamgyong Province, to be given to workers at Kim Chaek Iron & Steel Complex.
The Daily NK, an online newspaper, reported the price of rice in the border city of Sinuiju, which was 400 won per kg late last month, more than doubled to 1,000 won. The official rice price fixed by the regime on Feb. 4 is 240 won per kg.
A North Korean source said the regime is trying all it can to overcome the food crisis and all agencies involved in earning dollars have been told to import food.
Now the general situation is pretty bad, state control is slipping fast. The incident like this is no longer the exception, but part of the general trend which may not be beaten back. Time is changing.

A glimpse of our future after Obamacare and Cap & Trade?
Thank you for this post. Interesting times ahead.
My prayers are with them and I wish them luck.
South Korea should start loading the hot air balloons they now float over North Korea with leaflets with Ruger LCP 380’s and extra ammo and give the starving North Koreans a fighting chance.
I doubt that. The 0bamaoists will cling to their leader, as with the cultist norms, and follow their Dear Leader's admonishments to attack counter-revolutionaries wherever they may be found. It'll start with race and ideological riots and attacks. Progress to civilian on civilian looting and violence. Only when the 0bamaoists begin indiscriminate killings will any concerted efforts be made to directly attack government forces. By then, the country will have already been so divided and "balkanized" that secessionist movements will have sprung up and the nation's military would have fractured with government loyalists in conflict with patriotic units. Of course, the world will have stepped in, as well. UN thugs will be in many corners of the nation, mostly in blue states and metro areas. Parts of the country would have been annexed by those the Federal government owes monies to. The inhabitants who hadn't had the chance to escape would be virtual slaves to their new masters with nary a peep from the demoncrat/Marxocrats and 0bamaoists.
Sounds like fun, eh?
How long until obama sends in the US military to “preserve stability”? /barely serious, but too possible for comfort
“UN thugs will be in many corners of the nation, mostly in blue states and metro areas.”
You’re right about “mostly in blue states.” The UN blue helmets do not want to set foot in Texas, for example. I’ve seen homemade paper targets of blue helmets at shooting ranges more than a few times here...
Do you think it is possible to have a real revolution in NoKo, that overthrows Kim and the entire communist government? How long do you think Kim can hold on and keep a lid on all-out revolution??
As for what happens afterward, it is a wild card. There are several possible scenarios. Although some is considered more likely than others, odds are more spread out than we tend to think.
No centerline on that highway.
How do they avoid headons? ;)
My advice...don’t eat the yellow snow.

But not soon enough to save many of them.
