I'd agree with that for all of the 19th and 20 Century, but remember this. The first 'progressives' were socialist Republicans - and it took conservative Democrats to toss them out of office. The political pendulum swings back and forth with the fortunes of parties... remember when Clinton was in office, over 600 Democrats suddenly decided they were Republicans.
