Minn. at center of ethanol debate (Thank you, Tim Pawlenty)

There's a showdown coming this year over the amount of ethanol that goes into gas tanks across the state; a fight over energy, money, and your safety.

Opponents of increasing ethanol use warn of overheating motors and corrosion. Proponents call those claims lies.

Minnesota is at the center of the battle because it wants to be the first state to increase the amount of ethanol in unleaded gasoline from 10 percent to 20 percent.

A 2005 law led to current regulations that mandate that each gallon of gas in Minnesota is 90 percent unleaded gasoline and 10 percent ethanol--a mix known as E10.

The same law calls for bumping the amount of ethanol to 15 percent later this year, if the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grants Minnesota a waiver.

The EPA hopes to decide on E15 by early summer.

Ethanol is good for the agribusiness lobby.

And that about sums it up.

I bought a brand new car in 2004. It currently has just over 84,000 miles on it. I have always used 10% ethanol feul. I have yet to suffer any vehicular maintenance issues due to ethanol.

It gums up all of my gasoline motors.....especially my boat. We need to get the Sierra Club and EPA out of my gas tank!

They’re talking about 20%....not 10%.

“They’re talking about 20%....not 10%.”

Has it been proven that that would caused damage to car engines?

E 85 gives 75 percent of normal gasoline mileage.
I would estimate a 20 percent blend would reduce mileage by at least 12 percent...
Anyone know the BTUs/gallon in ethanol ?

Corn and soy use in our auto increases the cost of our food.

Law of supply and demand. Why don’t they use other waste products.

Older vehicle? ETOH is a solvent, and an oxidizer. IT will first ‘clean out” all the sludge that has bulit up over the years, then rot your non-stainless steel tank - slowly from the inside.

Man, I love the stuff.....

Ethanol is another scam being foisted upon us by a well represented (connected) industry.

This will void warranties on any non-flex-fuel vehicle. It may even cause problems with flex fuel vehicles, since the engine computers can operate on a 0-10% ethanol and maybe the 75-95% ethanol, but the software does not adequately address between those two ranges.

Yet another reason to pull the plug on doing business in this state. Time to go back to Texas.

T-Paw as President? Hell no!

For every study that says it’s great there are 2 that say opposite. I do know it destroys 2 strokes and older bikes from personal experience. Got to know where to buy “real” gas in the metro...I have my favorite local station that still has cornfree gas.

Kia Motors rep on this TV piece last night were the ONLY automaker on record saying they’re OK with it..
