Arrest Made in Case of Missing California Girl By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: February 28, 2010
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Authorities say a registered sex offender has been arrested in the disappearance of a missing suburban San Diego teenager.
San Diego County Sheriff William Gore tells The Associated Press that 30-year-old John Albert Gardner of Riverside County was arrested Sunday afternoon. He says investigators suspect Gardner is tied to the disappearance of 17-year-old Chelsea King of Poway, who went for a run on Thursday and didn't return.
Gore says investigators linked Gardner to the crime through physical evidence recovered by investigators searching Rancho Bernardo Community Park, where King vanished. He wouldn't elaborate on the evidence.

There are times when the use of the old water board to discover details of crimes would be valuable.
I wonder if they traced his cell phone locations to the site during the times of both crimes.
How many young women have to die at the hands of “registered sex offenders” before we actually do something about putting these bastards away for good? Last year we had a young girl right here killed by another “registered sex offender” who was also homeless, and listed an abandoned house as his home of record.
This is sickening. I can barely imagine the rage I would feel as the father of this young woman.
The local community is very involved in this case - massive numbers of neighbors out searching for her.

The sheriff also there was “a strong possibility” Gardner may be connected to an attack on a lone female jogger in Rancho Bernardo Community Park that occurred the morning of Dec. 27.
He said investigators were also looking into any connection between Gardner and Amber Dubois, who disappeared while walking to Escondido High School one morning just over a year ago. Amber was 14 at the time. - - - - - - - The jogger likely picked him out from a photo line up, God bless her.

John Albert Gardner, 30, was arrested at around 4:20 p.m. local time in connection with disappearance of Chelsea King, 17, of Poway. Gardner is a registered sex offender in the state of California. His past offenses, as listed on California’s Megan Law registered sex offender Web Site, consist of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.

John Albert Gardner III, 30, of Lake Elsinore, was taken into custody in front of an Escondido business at 4:20 p.m. on Lake Drive near Rancho Drive in Escondido, Gore said.
Sounds to me like the jogger from 12/27/09 might have identified him from a photo line-up but I’m sure glad the sheriff’s have physical evidence too.
