STEYN: Our own Greek tragedy
The Washington Times | 02-26-10 | Mark Steyn

Obamanomics hastens the day of reckoning

While President Obama was making his latest pitch for a brand new, even more unsustainable entitlement at the health care "summit," thousands of Greeks took to the streets to riot. An enterprising cable network might have shown the two scenes on a continuous split screen - because they're part of the same story. It's just that Greece is a little further along in the plot: They're at the point where the canoe is about to plunge over the falls. America is further upstream and can still pull for shore, but has decided instead that what it needs to do is catch up with the Greek canoe. Chapter One (the introduction of unsustainable entitlements) leads eventually to Chapter 20 (total societal collapse): The Greeks are at Chapter 17 or 18.

What's happening in the developed world today isn't so very hard to understand: The 20th century Bismarckian welfare state has run out of people to stick it to. In America, the feckless insatiable boobs in Washington, Sacramento, Albany and elsewhere are screwing over our kids and grandkids. In Europe, they've reached the next stage in social democratic evolution: There are no kids or grandkids to screw over. The United States has a fertility rate of around 2.1, or just over two kids per couple. Greece has a fertility rate of about 1.3: 10 grandparents have six kids have four grandkids - i.e., the family tree is upside down. Demographers call 1.3 "lowest-low" fertility - the point from which no society has ever recovered. And compared to Spain and Italy, Greece has the least worst fertility rate in Mediterranean Europe.

A masterful analysis of the Greek-EU situation and how it applies to our future. Great piece by Steyn.

MarK Steyn is absolutely right.

Greece is a perfect example of mostly socialist society. Almost a third of population is employment directly by government. Three decades of almost uninterrupted Socialist party rule, and what follows is the worst economy in EU and Common Market.

What did they do instead of fixing the problems? They chose to kick the can further down the road and hide the swaps from ECB, essentially creating off-balance sheet future liabilities. Enron and WorldCom/MCI were pikers compared to Greece.

What scares me is that Greece may just be the first crack in the dam.

AIG is on the hook for greece, spain, portugal etc etc.

Money is the mother's milk of politics - Those insatiable boobs are running fresh out of milk.

Zeno's Paradox says we'll never catch up, and Heraclitus says we can't step in the same river twice either!

I used to know all of the Greek mythology.
Now I cant recall any of it.

One thing I do know is that the government of the great thinkers has toppled over and over.

The great thinkers of their time went from freedom to communism and then to socialism. The greeks seem to believe in nothing other than decadence.

America seems to believe in that as well this past 70 years.
I think we got tainted fighting for europe in WWII and brought the rot home.

Yep.

So many reasons for this, mostly from selling out their own morality for the “comfort and safety” of the welfare state.

Socialists and progressives were around even before WW1 in various forms.

“...In Europe, they’ve reached the next stage in social democratic evolution: There are no kids or grandkids to screw over...”

That’s not quite true. In Europe, they are importing people who come from places where abortion is not considered to be acceptable. These people at best do not value [and at worst disdain] Western freedoms and culture.

Europe is beyond saving and America stands at the precipice.

The Left still believes in the notion that all change is for the good and all history is a progression. Neither is true. Our fate will be decided by the end of this century. The danger of a dark age looms as we continue to indulge fleeting desires.

Not to worry, the Muslims are moving in and breeding like flies.

However, as another FReeper noted:
“Islam is a cancer.
Radiation is the answer.”
