It is early evening on Capitol Hill, and I am sitting with Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican, who, along with John Kerry and Joe Lieberman, is trying to craft a new energy bill one that could actually win 60 votes. What is interesting about Graham is that he has been willing courageously in my view to depart from the prevailing G.O.P. consensus that the only energy policy we need is drill, baby, drill.
What brought you around, I ask? Grahams short answer: politics, jobs and legacy. We start with politics. The Republican Party today has a major outreach problem with two important constituencies, Hispanics and young people, Graham explains:
I have been to enough college campuses to know if you are 30 or younger this climate issue is not a debate. Its a value. These young people grew up with recycling and a sensitivity to the environment and the world will be better off for it. They are not brainwashed. ... From a Republican point of view, we should buy into it and embrace it and not belittle them. You can have a genuine debate about the science of climate change, but when you say that those who believe it are buying a hoax and are wacky people you are putting at risk your partys future with younger people. You can have a legitimate dispute about how to solve immigration, but when you start focusing on the last names of people the demographics will pass you by.
So Grahams approach to bringing around his conservative state has been simple: avoid talking about climate change, which many on the right dont believe.

He proposes putting a price on carbon, starting with a very focused carbon tax...

I’m getting tired of @$$holes like Graham telling us that, if America turns to communism, it will create jobs. Screw you slick!

Biden endorses a fusion ticket: Kerry-McCain
Mar. 2004
Biden made his comments on MSNBC TVs Hardball when moderator Chris Matthews asked him: Do you think McCain is seriously and I mean this professionally flirting with the idea of accepting a second place on the ticket with John Kerry, and creating a fusion ticket to run against the president?
Replied Biden: I think that this is time for unity in this country, and maybe it is time to have a guy like John McCain a Republican on the ticket with a guy he does like. They do get along. And they dont have fundamental disagreements on major policies.

How did South Carolina end up voting for a Rat like Graham?
I think the best comment about Lindsey Graham is that “He should change his name to ‘Ron Weasely’.”
“You mean like the Harry Potter character Ron Weasley?”
“Is there a Harry Potter character named Ron Weasley?”
“How did South Carolina end up voting for a Rat like Graham?”
Because he has an R beside his name. The best thing we could do for voting is to remove any party affiliation beside the candidates name.
McCain and Graham have always loved this ‘one party’ unity.
File this under the how soon we forget category:
McCain defends Kerry on defense Arizona senator says GOP rhetoric not helpful
March. 18, 2004
WASHINGTON - Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Thursday he did not believe Democratic candidate John Kerry, a friend and Senate colleague, was weak on defense or would compromise national security if elected president.
This kind of rhetoric, I think, is not helpful in educating and helping the American people make a choice, McCain said on The Early Show on CBS. You know, its the most bitter and partisan campaign that Ive ever observed. I think its because both parties are going to their bases rather than going to the middle. I regret it.[snip]
