I am going to disappoint Leon Wieseltier. The famous liberal wrote this week, "A day does not go by when I do not do my humble part to prevent such a transformation [of American Jewry from liberals to conservatives] from coming to pass."
Well, Leon, you let one get by.
My transformation has occurred. It began with 9/11 and progressed along bumpily until the Obama, Pelosi, Reid express train came roaring down the track . . .
For years I had been looking around and asking, "What the heck has happened to the Democratic Party that I grew up in?" My Democratic Party loved America, believed in the Constitution, free market values, and independent thought and actions. When did it turn into the Party of "group think" and intolerance, of programmed talking points and mean spirited, vitriolic spokespersons such as Wanda Sykes and Janeane Garofalo? . . .
Now, all of this transformation has not followed a smooth and flowing path . . . How could I, a child of the sixties, a lifelong Democrat and a Jew be listening to Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck?! I guess that part of the answer to that question could come from the fact that the current Democratic President of the United States came to his epiphany listening to Reverend Wright . . .

“Just watch this November...when the “Reagan Democrats” make their voices heard. They’ve had enough of the current crowd.”
It’s a long time until November and anything can happen.
Watch those “brilliant” independents. They’ll prove their “brilliance” once again by voting for “brilliant”, intelligent, “intellectual” Democrats, thereby saving the country. (once again)
IMHO
no no no... I think you’re wrong. Because this bunch never learns. They are going to go for the “downs.”
health care
card check
amnesty
The whole nine yards.
There are plenty of us ex-Democrats (Jewish and otherwise) who are now conservative. :) We should all write a chapter for a book...
SkyPilot,
I have a great booklet written by Richard Wurmbrand (”Tortured for Christ”) called “Karl Marx & Satan.”
I found the whole thing online and saved it.
If you’d like a copy, send me a private e-mail and I send it to you.

Welcome home Candice, welcome home.
Yes, my parents made the switch sometime in the sixties too. My Dad, a small business owner sat me down in 1976 and gave me the talk.
He said:
“I was a lifelong Democrat until I saw what the Government was doing with all my hard earned money, I switched to the Republican Party and never looked back. I trust you will consider the same thing when you vote for the first time.”
I registered as a Republican....and never looked back.
From the article: “It began with 9/11 and progressed along bumpily until the Obama, Pelosi, Reid express train came roaring down the track. Putting the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, is our current foreign policy that abandons Israel, leaving it alone amidst a sea of savages and enablers that daily howl for its very destruction.”
I feel bad for Leon Weiseltier. He wrote probably the best piece I read after 9/11, eloquent and moving. TNR, at least at that time, had no way to email or archive their articles, but if anybody could find it it would be well worth your time to read.
Maybe Mr. Weiseltier should re-read his own writing.
I suppose he’s one of those foolish Jews who thinks Republicans will try to force him to convert to Christianity.
Obama is certainly a new low and may do a great deal to drive out the very few remaining Dem moderates from the party.
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Did you send your kids to a public school?

Nice to see one person waking up. That is why it is so important that we never retreat into political strategy over the substance of our message which is a good one that is founded in the values and principles that built this strong nation. We can not and should not adopt social and fiscal liberalism to win others to our-side because if that is our tactic who is being won over? If we have faith in the truth of our message and our beliefs we should be happy to debate them and express them because they are superior.
The reason leftist radio doesn’t succeed is a prime example of why the message of the left is bankrupt. No one with any self respect wants to hear of adopt a message steeped in weakness, bitterness, and helplessness. They also don’t want to find themselves praising the efficacy of a federal government which has repeatedly proved itself incompetent, spend happy, and detached from reality. People may be naive but they are not stupid and that is why the debate is important. Once we refuse to debate we lose. The Democrats are losing for exactly that reason. They defend their ideas as if they are self evident when they most clearly are not.
This President Obama which Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid will have down more damage to his party than even Bill Clinton and Hillary in 1994. What Obama, Pelosi, and Reid are driving is an ideological shift. They though incorrectly that Obama had down that with the election which was foolish. To the layman he didn’t campaign as a liberal, he campaigned as tax cutter, getting out of the war, and reform. No only has he not undone the excesses of the Bush Presidency he has double down on many of them and sent spending and government growth into the stratosphere.
We will see a lot more ideological conversions. The best thing to happen along with this is the Tea Party movement because it is driving independents to a place where they can be conservative. It is the big danger because where Obama and liberal excess is the impetus the Tea Party is the foundation of a lifelong identification with the founding principles of this nation which so many apolitical types have lacked.
Good news, though one cannot help but wonder why someone who is opposed to abandoning Israel to savages wanted to do the same to South Vietnam in the Sixties. The two countries were very much in the same boat.
What about the Populist movement and the nomination of William Jennings Bryan in 1896, 1900, and 1908?
A smooth transition from a culture of victims to Marxist screed camp folower, a rough contentious transition to being an American.
More likely the smoldering radioactive debris of what once was Jerusalem, courtesy of their moslem hero Barack Obama and his Persian friends.
I don't see much danger of that period....maybe an epic cataclysm...probably not even then.
What we think is largely due to what we are and where we come from...I know PC folks hate that notion but I've lived long enough to see it over and over....I can usually tell on this forum who I'm dealing with on many issues just by their tone and stance.
I wish I had that Herzberg quote handy..."Jews are by innate tradition expected to question assumptions in the culture they always inhabit as a minority"
if true that makes conservatism unlikely ever..
though some...lol...ignore all that and follow empirical observation, logic and the God who created them..and I thank them for it
I don’t support Israel because I’m a Christian and although I like Hagee’s social conservatism, he’s off the reservation at times.
supporting Israel just due to Christian dogma sounds condescending to Jews
you needn’t be a Christian to know Israel is the good guy and that their culture is more like ours (or like our’s used to be..the ideal)
Maybe more will become conservative then. The assumptions of the majority--from popular culture and entertainment to education and politics--coincide with their general views.
BINGO. . .but what about the cat?
