Blacks were strung up all the time during slavery days. It was frequently used to punish runway slaves as a warning to the others.
Up until the Civil Rights movement, black men accused of crimes (especially rape of white women) were frequently lynched by hanging.
My frame of reference is the American West; so to me it has been puzzling to see how this is an insult. Unless one was being called a horse thief.

Sorry, slave owners looked at slaves as expensive investments and considering the time it took a lot of money to buy a slave. It made zero sense to destroy that investment. Punished, yes. Killed, seldom.
