WALNUT CREEK Gays and lesbians should be allowed to adopt, but not marry. Illegal immigration is a huge problem, but immigrant children shouldn't be punished for the sins of their parents. And California is a mess, but that doesn't mean it's going to fail.
In her first major interview since kicking her campaign into high gear, Meg Whitman, the front-runner for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, revealed her views on issues ranging from the "right to carry" movement to offshore oil drilling, Sarah Palin, the state budget and education reform.
Whitman, the former eBay chief, has been under attack by Democrats and her Republican rival, state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner, for avoiding debates and California political reporters and for not being specific enough on issues.
But in a fast-paced, 40-minute interview with the Mercury News, Whitman said she's trying to "be as accessible as I can be" while giving political stump speeches around the state.
And she was far more polished than she appeared in a February 2009 interview with the Los Angeles Times, during which the political novice often seemed unschooled in the issues of the day such as school vouchers, a key Republican issue.
In Wednesday night's interview, conducted after a speech to a Republican group in Walnut Creek, Whitman came across as a quick study politically savvy and surprisingly comfortable in her own political skin.
After months of speculation about just where she falls on the ideological spectrum, she described herself as an "extraordinary fiscal conservative" who is "moderate to conservative" on social issues.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the hot tub..
an “extraordinary fiscal conservative” who is “moderate to conservative” on social issues
She’s a coward. All of her stances split the issues right down the middle. Feh.
She also believes people have the right to carry concealed as long as the pistols are unloaded.
OK, she sounds like a big RINO. I’m probably not the first to say this.
I’d debate you on that .. she won’t . ;-)
It’s her support of Abortion that makes her a politician I cannot and will not vote for.
This is just the latest Rino pinata an ineffectual party leadership has offered up.. she’s got all the things they want.. she’s loaded and has her own private jet. makes their jobs a lot easier..
Fine. Whatever. Illegal immigration is a huge problem, but immigrant children shouldn't be punished for the sins of their parents.
If you believe this, then BUILD A G**DAMNED WALL! At least shut off the valve. Oh, and make those kids learn English and to be AMERICANS and I might be OK with it.
And California is a mess, but that doesn't mean it's going to fail.
It will if people don't wise up.
Its interesting when people say this. If you ask them who pays for these "moderate socials issues", there is never an answer.
NO
This nation is getting squeezed from both ends.
Would you call Alexander the Great a coward? All of Alexander's etihcal stances were straight down the middle ...

On illegals, Whitman says prop 187 was “wrong” because it was aimed “mostly at children” by “denying them health services and an education” and that “the children did not come here on their own.”
The problem with mass illegal immigration from Mexico is not only the crippling fiscal burden imposed by millions of illegals on public services.
It is also that productive Americans will move away from these areas after a tipping point is reached in terms of cultural change.
At that point, the stage is set for complete fiscal collapse as much of the tax base has left and a third world low-skilled high-crime significantly black-market economy with a population heavily dependent on government welfare remains.
So where did she “hold forth” on anything?
WHITMAN in her own words
OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: “Historically” she”s been against it. But “if I can be convinced the environmental risk is near zero” because of new technology, she would favor it.
TAX RETURNS: Says she “might” release them, but not as a result of pressure from the “union front” groups supporting Jerry Brown, the presumed Democratic nominee.
“RIGHT TO CARRY” MOVEMENT: Says she doesn”t oppose the movement but understands why restaurants and other businesses might want to ban people from openly carrying guns.
SARAH PALIN: Says she did a “remarkable job” after being named John McCain”s running mate “ but Whitman dodged a question about whether Palin was qualified to be president.
EDUCATION REFORM: Says she wants to give all California schools a letter grade so parents will push to reform schools that are not up to standards. Would increase the probation period for teachers from two to four years before they can get tenure.
Good point. I’d buy ya a drink for that one... but it’s a little early.. but not by much.
I don’t quite go back to the pat brown days but had relatives here long before WW2 brought my Uncle here.
I remember the Moonbeam days and have lived here long enough to see the social decay and corruption despoil°rade the place.
It still sparkles once and awhile..
I’m guessing...fag hag, pro some gun control and but tight fiscal
