SALISBURY -- When Sarah Leach opened the box UPS had delivered, she fully expected to find a new computer she'd ordered.

Instead, she says, she found packing peanuts and something that was clearly not a laptop -- several shrink-wrapped packages full of thousands of dollars worth of drugs.

Leach called police immediately. She was so frightened she waited for them to arrive on her front stoop.

Oops, those drugs were meant for the West Wing.

Give ‘em back now.

Signed,

The box contained 45 pounds of pot.

Twinkie and Doritos sales will probably be lower in her town for the next month.

It’s sad but the woman was right to be frightened. The owners of the drugs might have come for them and reacted harshly to her calling the police. DEA might also have reacted harshly to her “possession” of illegal drugs, even though the call came from her. She’s lucky that she dealt with decent police and not with someone who has trouble remembering the purpose of their job. [Note: I think most cops are on the right track, there is just an unfortunately large minority who worry me.]

“”””She was so frightened she waited for them to arrive on her front stoop.”””””

Someone should tell her that drugs won’t hurt her unless she takes them.
Even then, just a little pinch won’t hurt... so thats what they tell me.

This lady is lucky. Many times the drug cops will do a “controlled delivery” on these cases. They intercept a package suspected of carrying drugs, and obtain a search warrant to open it. If it does contain drugs, they re-seal the box with a device set to go off when the box is opened. They then do the delivery at the residence, having the occupant sign for it. Then they wait outside in the van, armed with an “anticipatory search warrant” and wait for the device to signal the box has been opened. Once it’s opened, they storm the house and the occupant is off to jail, usually charged with possession with intent to deliver controlled substances.

This lady is very lucky, because I can guarantee the cops would not listen to the “this is all a mistake” story.

Good thing she invited the cops to her home. Otherwise if she'd just stopped by the police box they'd have arrested her for dealing free drugs.

UK is so strange these days. I'm afraid to visit the place.

I was sitting in the coffee shop
Just minding my own affair
When all of a sudden, this
Policeman caught me unaware

Said, is your name Pedro
I says, yeah, I guess so
Said, then come with me cause
You’re the man we been looking for

I said, hey, man
I been framed
Hey, no, really, man
I was framed

Aw, I never do nothing wrong, man
But every time I get the blame
I been framed

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered some medications from a firm purporting to be based in Canada. The tracking data so far shows the package is being flown in from India! It will be interesting to see what sort of stuff arrives ... India, I mean INDIA!

Even with the way it went down, she was right to be frightened. She had a 50/50 chance of living out a Hitchcock movie when the cops got there.

There was a story recently (you probably saw the thread) where a guy in the UK turned in a gun he found, and they busted him for possessing the gun.

I an attorney with a criminal defense practice. I have a client right now who called the police for a violent domestic on her boyfriend. When they showed up, she produced his stash of pot for them to confiscate. They took her to jail and charged her with possession. It happens a lot.

There have been instances that the police charged the inadvertent recipient of just such a package. You cannot trust the police. Her lawyer would have been safer first.

This happened in a suburb just outside DC a couple of years ago. The cops raided the mayor’s house, shot the dogs and arrested his wife for a UPS drug drop.
