The article would be more accurate if it had said that they were more arrogant.

The Center for Public Intellectuals & The University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC)
April 19th-20th, 2002, Conference

[Participants include: William/Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Sen Barack Obama]

April 19th-20th, 2002
Chicago Illini Union
828 S. Wolcott

This conference is part of the Center's mission of helping to create a more engaged civil society, working towards social change, fostering coalitions between theorists and activists, and combating anti-intellectualism in contemporary culture. It will be both a celebration of ideas and a rigorous examination of the roles and responsibilities that intellectuals play in society.

I. Why Do Ideas Matter? (a keynote panel)

We introduce the “meta” theme of the conference by hearing “success stories” from diverse voices discussing their experiences intervening intellectually.

Timuel Black, Chicago activist; Prof. Emeritus, City Colleges of Chicago
Lonnie Bunch, President, Chicago Historical Society
Bernardine Dohrn, Northwestern University Law School, Children and Family Justice Center
Gerald Graff, UIC, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences
Richard Rorty, Stanford University, Philosophy

III. Lunch and Public Encounters

Alternative breakout tours led by Chicago activists. Tours of Bronzeville and other communities, and visits to organizations that are working on partnering theorists with activists.

IV. Intellectuals in Times of Crisis
Experiences and applications of intellectual work in urgent situations.

William Ayers, UIC, College of Education; author of Fugitive Days
Douglass Cassel, Northwestern University, Center for International Human Rights
Cathy Cohen, University of Chicago, Political Science
Salim Muwakkil, Chicago Tribune; In These Times
Barack Obama, Illinois State Senator
Barbara Ransby, UIC, African-American Studies (moderator)

"It was at the Chicago home of [Bill] Ayers and [Bernardine] Dohrn that ["intellectual"] Obama, then an up-and-coming 'community organizer,' had his political coming out party in 1995. Not content with this rite of passage in Lefty World — where unrepentant terrorists are regarded as progressive luminaries, still working 'only to educate' — both Obamas tended to the relationship with the Ayers."

My thoughts exactly. Book smarts doesn’t give you wisdom. Wisdom is better then a high I.Q. any day.

I think it takes more faith to be an atheist, then it does to be a Christian. You have to believe, everything in the universe was just happen chance, not intelligent design. Order has never come out of chaos.

Since intelligence itself is a trait shaped by long-term evolution of our species, this theory predicts that people who are more intelligent are more likely to be stupid!

According to the strict rules of Darwinism any such conclusion is completely meaningless. This is so because under the rules of Darwinism all thought is essentially without any intrinsic significance or importance since it is the result of random chemical reactions initiated by cellular DNA the sole purpose of which is self replication. Beyond basic survival and replication this world and everything in it means nothing. Intelligence may be merely a more efficient (theoretically) means for DNA to perpetuate itself. Arguments about “truth” or “value” are without meaning beyond whether such chemically created concepts aid or retard the perpetuation of the DNA that is their ultimate source.

Why aren’t they smart enough to figure out why people don’t like them much?

Doncha know that they are so smart they don't care. They think that they are so superior that our opinions and ideas don't count.

"Similarly, religion is a byproduct of humans' tendency to perceive agency and intention as causes of events, to see "the hands of God" at work behind otherwise natural phenomena. "Humans are evolutionarily designed to be paranoid, and they believe in God because they are paranoid," says Kanazawa. "

According to the author...you are just paranoid :o)

The author says: And the theory predicts that more intelligent men are more likely to value sexual exclusivity than less intelligent men, but general intelligence makes no difference for women's value on sexual exclusivity.

That sounds contrary to most liberal thought and practice.

Maybe that exclusivity thing applies somewhat in the cloisters of academe but in my observations I don’t notice that more intelligent men are any less horny than the rest of us. Besides, since all life is the result of a fortuitous combination of chemicals that somehow burst into life and the sole purpose of which is self-pertetuation why should exclusivity in sexual partners matter in the least? I would think that the more impregnation occurs the better. So maybe intelligence isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Atheism is ever bit “faith-based” as traditional religion. How can they know for certain that God doesn’t exist.

They don’t. This is simple logic. No one can prove or disprove the existence of God (i.e. put him in a bottle and measure he exists). Therefore, whether you chose to believe or not believe in God is an issue of faith, since one has faith when one cannot “prove” what one believes in to 100% accuracy.

Why this upsets the athiests so much is that they are insufferably arrogant in thinking that they and only they know what is really going on and everyone else is an enfeebled idiot (i.e. the theme of this article). To realize that their metaphysical belief system is no more valid or provable than any other groups opinion removes their knee-jerk superiority complex. It would be nice if they could get over themselves and join the rest of us in realizing that it is okay for others to believe differently in spiritual matters.

I’m so paranoid that the God that doesn’t exist healed me of liver cancer at the altar of my church. It’s medically documented. Among many other things that miraculously has changed over the course of my relationship with the God that doesn’t exist. I’ll just stay paranoid, thank you very much...lol

Why are we attacking this article? Don’t we want liberals to believe they are smarter? If they think we are stupid, then we can take advantage of them.

If i had to choose between Wisdom or Intellect, I’d choose wisdom every time.

And while there are some intelligent liberals, most of them lack wisdom.

After the last 20 years of the culture war (starting with Clinton’s election), people are fed up with the elitist thinking exhibited by this article. Those on the left will always condescend and dismiss anyone who thinks differently from them (look at Obama in today’s meeting on health care with the Republicans), so even if you expose them they will continue to press forward. Meanwhile, the average unattentive citizen will realize that the elitist do not represent a consensus opinion and perhaps pay more attention to what is going on (or at least we can hope).
