Malaysias first submarine, the Scorpene-class KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, successfully underwent underwater trials in the South China Sea yesterday.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a technical team was aboard during the submarines dive to monitor its progress under water.
The dive was successfully completed by 4pm. Everything was pronounced to be okay, Dr Ahmad Zahid said in an SMS.
The trials were carried out at the Royal Malaysian Navy base in Teluk Sepanggar, Sabah.
It was earlier reported that the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman was unable to dive after a mechanical defect was discovered by engineers.
The problem forced the delay of its test in tropical waters, which was supposed to be completed at the end of last month.
Last week, Zahid said the technical defect, which affected the submarines high-pressure air valve system, had been rectified by the manufacturer and contractor under a warranty agreement.
The submarine arrived in Malaysia in September last year.
A second submarine, KD Tun Abdul Razak, is expected to arrive on May 31.
Both submarines were acquired for a total of RM3.4bil and jointly manufactured by French and Spanish shipbuilders.

A Muslim-owned submarine (or two or three) is a good (for the enemy) way to plug the (Muslim-owned) Malaysian Straits to control the flow of oil to Japan, China, Korea.
Thanks for that explanation. I was wondering why in the world Malaysia would need a submarine. Now I know.
And how are they supposed to be at their posts when they have to pray 5 times a day?
You are right
but did it re-surface successfully?
Most likely it did.
Ignoring the obvious holes in your logic, do you really think Singapore would sit by and let it happen? Or anyone else?
In simple terms, China invades Malaysia to save the Chinese.
Not a chance.
"The Scorpene, a diesel-electric propulsion submarine (SSK) built by French military shipyard DCNS at Cherbourg, in partnership with Spanish naval shipyard Navantia."
That was my first question. The diving part is easy; it's the undiving part that can be a bit tricky.
It's warfare. Possibly (probably ?) against Singapore itself, or a supporter of Singapore's policy. Or to influence Singapore's policies.
Without a weapon, you have no threat.
With a weapon, you can begin to make threats.
With a credible weapon (and quantities and the people and supplies and logistics to make it a credible weapon) you can begin to decide who and what threats you can execute.
(Would Obama EVER even threaten (much less actually use force against!) anybody who is trying to oppose a Communist or Muslim or African dictator?)
In a war with Singapore, Malaysia wouldn't stand a chance. The only chance Malaysia's submarines would have is if they parked them somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic.
I hope someone checked the propeller and made sure it has a cotter pin installed. The French don't have such a good track record with props staying on vessels they build.....
Meanwhile, no word on how the surfacing went...
Should be pretty easy to sink.
“Should be pretty easy to sink.”
Surfaces five times a day on a course towards Mecca.
