OK OK.....I know this may seem a silly and simplistic topic/post in such an age. Still, I just wanted to share a little "trick" with my fellow FReepers that has served me very well over the years. I've taught this to many; all have been grateful.
We all, especially us FReepers, take in so much information in a typical day (work, home, FR, TV, talk radio, etc.) that often it is very difficult to recall certain facts; certain information.
You know that feeling...."..oh darn it, what's-his-name....I can't remember"; or "...oh you know, that movie with...ummm....dang it...".
Here's the key: NEVER say "I can't remember". Never. What I want you to say from now on is "It'll come to me.".
Then....just drop it from your thoughts. Fuhgedaboutit (no pun intended). What you have just done is program that marvelous, God-given computer of yours (aka your brain) a command. It typically takes 5-20 minutes for that recall process to complete and you will find yourself blurting out the answer. Yes, it works.
When you say "I can't remember"....guess what? You've done the same, and your "computer" will do exactly what you just programmed it to do. It won't remember.
Small thing. Trivial....but it has helped me so much over many years, and I hope this little thing helps you. God bless you all, my fellow FReepers.
That reminds me of the mnemonic used to memorize the 7-layer OSI model for computer networking. It was All Good Kids Like Milk, or something. :^)
(Okay, it was All People Seem To Need Data Processing - IIRC that was for: application, presentation, session, transport, network, data link, physical)
Ahh, the Power of Positive Thinking. It’s one of the few valuable things I took away from my Amway experience.
Unfortunately, I sometimes suffer from Bongheimer’s disease.
Oh I love such things. Recently, I was teaching a friend some VERY basic things on the guitar. Now, I’m self taught....but have been playing for over 40 years. I was teaching this person the guitar strings (top to bottom: E A D G B E). I realized I had never seen a way to easily remember that....so I came up with (God only knows where...): Every Apple Does Get Bitten Eventually.
Yeah, I know.....dumb......but it worked. This friend STILL remembers those guitar strings just that way. :)
When I can not recall a name, I silently repeat the alphabet. I will often get to the first letter, and the name will come to me. I occassionally have to go through this twice. It works for me.
Profound. Thank you.
Whaddya mean "beginning"......????
LOL....just kidding. Thank you for your kind words.
You’re so very welcome. Hope it helps.
I find it helps if you post replies twice ;-)
Wow!!! Thanks, my friend. I will begin to practice that RIGHT NOW.
Blessings!!!
Good for you.....and blessings to you and yours, as well.
I can remember my husband's army serial number , but not what I had for breakfast this morning.
(That would be WW2.....)
I use, “I’ll think of it in a minute.” It surely does work. Thanks for sharing!
Oh, that’s an easy one. It’s a matter of priority. To you, his Army serial number was very important to memorize; to keep in “memory” vs. “disk”, in computer terms. Right?
What you had for breakfast isn’t so important....so we sometimes reach a point where our brain can readily filter what’s important vs. what isn’t important.
Not a thing wrong with you. Still, that said, it’s never a bad idea to begin to exercise your short term memory. Lots of ways to do that. I even recommend games: dice games, dominoes (GREAT game for this), etc. Anything that exercises your short term memory.
Funny you brought this up. I was just Googling “Observation games” and “Memory games”. It’s fun to do some of these exercises to test your memory. I can recall in school we’d have a picture to look at for about 30 seconds then we’d have to answer questions from memory about what we had seen. Great exercises and fun to do. Thought they’d have some of those online, but can’t find any.
Well you inspired me to Google....so try this one:

Sorry....meant to add....what I Googled on was “short term memory exercises”. Got a lot of hits.
You are absolutely right - this does work.
Another thing that helped me is that, if you can’t find something, it is usually within 5 feet of where you think it is.
Is there a difference between I Can’t Remember from “I Don’t Have Any Recollection”?
LOL.........good one. Nope, same thing. Handy for politicians, isn’t it? :)
