The US death toll in Afghanistan has reached 1,000 with the number of soldiers killed doubling since last year.

The icasualties.org website, which tracks military deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq, said 54 US soldiers had died in the war so far this year, as the coalition tries to regain momentum in its eight-year campaign.

It was the worst toll for two consecutive months since the US-led invasion of 2001 and compared with a toll of 30 in the same period last year.

I did search and didn’t see the article.

Of course, this is from the UK. No one touches this here.

Take the handcuffs off - rewrite the Rules of Engagement to allow American and NATO soldiers to take the initiative - rather having to wait until the Taliban take the first [sometimes killing] shots.

If we are to fight - fight to win or pack up!!

Our local paper, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, used to keep a running tally within the first 2 pages, with pictures of coffins on the front page whenever a local soldier died. It is not so easy to find now....

At the rate our soldiers are being killed this year, it will take less than two years to reach 2,000.

The new rules of engagement are one of the major reasons for the sharp increase in casualties. I don't know who is responsible: the Obama administration, Gen. McChrystal (who seems to be politically correct) or both.

“Journalists” are the only people more dishonest than politicians.

” I don’t know who is responsible: the Obama administration, Gen. McChrystal (who seems to be politically correct) or both.”

Don’t forget to add Admiral Mullen , Gates and General Casey into the
touchy feely , “ the feelings of Muslims trump the lives of our soldiers ,”
PC diversity mix.

We had a thread here on how the strict war rules were slowing the Afghan offensive-
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2451949/posts

General McChrystal tightened the ROEs in 2009 to prevent injuries to civilians and their property.
General Gilmary Hostage speaking about General McChrystal , August 13, 2009 :
“ Hostage said McChrystal told his forces, “If you are in a situation where there’s a civilian at risk,
he’d rather have us back away
than pressing to engage the enemy and run the risk of damaging or hurting somebody.”
George Patton must be spinning.

McChrystal is pleased that civilian casualties were down 30% in 2009.
Unfortunately , US military deaths in Afghanistan set a record in 2009.
We lost over 300 members of the US military in 2009- 30 % of the total deaths to that point in Afghanistan since 2001.
Civilian deaths down 30% , US military deaths up 30 %.
There is a pattern here...
