Such is my ignorance of this particular slur that I didn’t grasp the outrage when I first watched the clip. I took “coconut” to be some sort of archaic Three-Stooges-esque putdown, like “dimbulb” or “numbskull.” Turns out that the boss emeritus has been dealing with it for decades, just as black conservatives have had to deal with the “Oreo” nonsense. A review of the transcript at Newsbusters makes me think, yeah, that’s exactly how Deutsch intended it:

Why is it always the white guys who get to decide how a “minority” is supposed to act? It’s liberal white guys who love to throw around these words like “oreo” and “coconut.”
And what’s more bizarre, nobody ever calls them on it. They can be as racist as they want, it’s all good if they’re liberals.

Really, it’s a slur? I lived in Miami for a couple of decades and never even heard the term! Exactly, can someone tell me what the word means, aside from a fruit? hanging from a tree? Does it mean Rubio is gay?

Like most Cubans living in the US, Rubio has no "brown" blood; he's most likely of pure Spanish (i.e., white European) descent.
Cuba is like America in that sense. There are black mixed cubans and spanish white cubans. Cubans are wonderful people. If it weren’t for the Cubans, Miami would have gone the way of Detroit and Chicago. They are very very enterprising. And they are also EXTREMELY political. I worked in a Cuban hospital in Miami, and the Cuban doctors are THE BEST you can find. Some folks will think I’m nuts, not coconuts, but that is my unbiased opinion.
