Plácido Domingo, the peripatetic tenor, conductor and opera house impresario, suffered severe abdominal pain while performing in Tokyo last week and will undergo preventive surgery, his spokeswoman said on Monday
. . .
Mr. Domingo, 69, suffered intense pain and discomfort while singing and conducting in Tokyo, Ms. Seltzer said. The pain lasted for more than a week, she said in a statement. He traveled to New York for a medical examination, and doctors recommended the surgery.

That was my first thought, too.
The US health care system is the gold standard for the world. Americans have created more effective medicines, treatments and cures than the rest of the world combined. Our hospitals and equipment are state-of-the-art. People flock here because our system is the best, the most advanced, the most effective. So, of course, the BO administration is out to destroy our system, and reduce US health care to the level of a second-rate, Third World non-power — and the Domingos of the world will have nowhere to go. Are we going to let them get away with it?
I'm not surprised that someone having surgery would prefer to be close to home. It may well be as simple as that.
Still, your healthcare observation remains correct...
On any given day, there are probably as many Saudi royals at the Cleveland or Mayo Clinics as there are in the Kingdom. 8^)
Placido is the ultimate cosmopolitan (an incredible man, really). So your point is spot on!

Rename, repackage, rewrite it a tad smaller, and sell another pig in a poke.
Tennessee has joined several other states in trying to pass a Health Care Freedom Act. NO COLAs for granny, retired Military or retired fed employees. BIG NEW fees for Tricare for Life retired over 65 Military's secondary health ins. (DOD bill already passed, delayed but goes into effect 2011)

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollees cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.)

Congress plans to block Tricare fee increases

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.
Snip
The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.
President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees in fiscal 2010, Matz said. We took them at their word, and I cant believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward, he added.

I think Domingo has lived in NYC or in the area for quite some years.”
I think he currently owns properties in LA (where he has a gig with the opera) and somewhere in Austria. This man truly doesn’t have a permanent home...he’s cosmopolitan in the extreme. And an extraordinary artist, performer, scholar....
Abdominal aortic aneurysm threatening to rupture?
Could be a big hiatal hernia, common to people his age.
It’s now done with a noninvasive technique, robotic instruments, bandaids on the entry sites, home in 5 days.
I had it in 2001.
Glad that you did so well. Let’s hope that Placido has an equally successful outcome. I guess that my suggestion was a little dark. My husband has an AAA not yet large enough to warrant surgery, but they keep a close eye on it.
