Indiana's Mitch Daniels 'open' to a White House run
Washington Post ^ | 02/22/10 | Dan Balz

Add one more name to the list of possible 2012 Republican candidates for president: Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels.

Two months ago, in an interview in his state capitol office, Daniels said explicitly he was not interested in running for president and dismissed speculation that he might be a candidate. That has now changed. During an interview at the winter meeting of the National Governors Association here over the weekend, Daniels said he has now been persuaded to keep open the door to a possible candidacy.

Daniels said he has had a number of conversations in recent months -- "none initiated by me" -- where the question of a 2012 campaign came up. "Just to get them off my back, I agreed to a number of people that I will now stay open to the idea," he said.

Among the people he has talked with is former president George W. Bush, though Daniels said it was not that conversation per se that tipped him to reopen a door he had seemingly closed.

I have no idea what his politics are like, if he's conservative or not. But, whatever the word is that means the opposite of "charisma", would perfectly describe Mitch Daniels.

Hmmm, hope some Freeper is close enough to give us a good idea of his persuasion.

I think the opposite of 'charisma' is 'Mondale.'

Some GOP insiders are concerned about SoCons being distrustful of Romney. Plus, the longer the healthcare debate goes on, the more people will look into RomneyCare. Thoese GOP insiders are looking into either “My Man Mitch” or “T-Paw” as a backup plan in case Mittens fizzles out.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...a powerhouse compared to Piyush “Bobby” Jindal. He could put a crackhead to sleep with a two minute speech.

Generally he's well-liked by Indiana conservatives, although you'll hear a lot of barking about his pushing Daylight Savings Time. I'd vote for him, I think he'd make an excellent president...But charisma wise he's no Palin.

I used to live in IN and liked what he did for the state, IN was in the black while most of the states were in the red. I am not sure where it is now.

He is a conservative and he is a businessman not a lawyer.

I still have friends that live in the state that run small businesses and think he is doing a great job in spite of the economy.

He leased out the toll road to a foreign company and that ticked off a number of people. I thought it was a win/ win situation for the state. Indps. airport is run by an English company and the Indps water is run by a French company, so this was nothing new for Indiana.

I think he would make a good president but would be surprised if he ran for office.

Mitch Daniels would be better than (almost?) every other commonly mentioned candidate.

Possible: Daniels, Jindal, Pawlenty, Thune, DeMint, other

Phony: Romneynot, Huckleberry

Not her time: Palin

Likes the sound of his own voice: Pence

Not gonna happen: Barbour, Jeb Bush, Cheney, Santorum, Brown

Bad joke: Gingrich, Paul

I wonder if a Mike Johanns type will come out of the woodwork and put together a decent campaign?

I like Daniels.

Doesn't he have a strain of Syrian blood or am I thinking of someone else?

He should run with Rick Perry, on a platform of selling off our highways to FOREIGN OWNERSHIP, for monopoly-protected tolling.

Sounds like a plan...nevermind, even though Daniels did it, and Perry attempted it (3 times), and went with a slightly different approach...they’ll NEVER own up to it.

Did he learn from his MISTAKE? Or is he like Perry, bought out and never changing his stripes?

He did say that we need to move on from Reagan conservatism. He inferred that Reagan philosophy of conservatism of small government, was over.

He caved to the Dems in the statehouse and cut into the state’s budget surplus, big time.

Like another poster said.....he’s Romney lite. So he’d be great if you want more of the same ol same ol.
