Hugo Chavez Demands Queen returns Falkland Islands to Argentina
The Telegraph ^ | 2/22/10 | Tom Leonard

President Hugo Chavez delivered a bizarre attack on the Queen when the firebrand Venezuelan leader demanded Britain return the Falkland Islands to Argentina.

The outspoken Mr Chavez used his weekly television and radio show Alo Presidente to rally Latin America behind the cause of his Argentine counterpart Cristina Kirchner by making a direct appeal to Buckingham Palace.

"Look, England, how long are you going to be in Las Malvinas? Queen of England, I'm talking to you," said Mr Chavez.

"The time for empires are over, haven't you noticed? Return the Malvinas to the Argentine people." Still addressing the Queen, he went on: "The English are still threatening Argentina. Things have changed. We are no longer in 1982. If conflict breaks out, be sure Argentina will not be alone like it was back then."

He described British control of the islands in the South Atlantic as "anti-historic and irrational" and asked "why the English speak of democracy but still have a Queen". Mrs Kirchner later sought to win new allies in its claims to the islands when she made a direct appeal for support at a meeting in Mexico of the Rio Group of Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Argentine anger is likely to increase after Desire Petroleum, the British oil company that has towed a rig from Scotland to about 60 miles off the north of the Falklands, announced on Monday it had begun drilling. Argentina is attempting to hamper oil exploration, insisting last week that all vessels using its ports must now seek permission if they plan to enter or leave British-controlled waters.

Argentina wants other South American countries to impose its transport restrictions to the Falklands but it is unlikely to win support from those closest to the islands such as Chile and Uruguay.

And what is he going to do? Is he going to send an Army in support of Argentina to invade the Falklands. If that’s the case, I’m afraid it might draw us into this mess. I think it’s a lot of bluster

More likely they will hit the British interests in the Caribbean at the same time. In addition the Venezuelan Navy can put ten frigates and a couple of decent subs to sea. Added to the Argentine forces that gives the Op For a decent fleet. And with the decrepit state of the Royal Navy they would have little choice but to surrender the islands.

In addition you couldn't go after Venezuela proper because of Russian Naval and Air forces that have been operating out of there. There can be no shooting if the Russians are around since the Brits can't risk hitting them.

I think he’s just saying this as a distraction. I don’t think he intends to do anything about it. Which probably wouldn’t be welcomed by Argentina, anyway.

Obama will side with the Argentinians on this one.

Chavez wants his own little empire. Remember Honduras a few months ago?

They’ll give it up. The Brits are where our libs want to go. Spinless and without spirit.

China was shocked when they left Hong Kong without a whimper. English citizens were not permitted to leave, so I don't hold out much hope for the Falklands unless there is a lot of oil involved.

Argentina had the Falklands from 1820 to 1833 when Great Britain took them. That’s after the Monroe Doctrine. Why doesn’t Chavez cite the Monroe Doctrine to prove that the Brits are there illegally?

Last time, the Brits were magnanimous.

Last time they had Thatcher, I hold no such confidence in Brown.

In fact, I believe that the native Indians in Venezuela were largely Caribs.

He’s trying to get the Argentine’s fired up again to do battle with Britian like the did in 1982. I hope the Brits don’t forget about the 20 men that went down on the HMS Sheffield when the Argentinian’s sunk her.

Maybe Obama can show some statesmanship and send a message to Argentina: "Don't get all wee-wee'd up!"

Of course, the Argentinians might have as much trouble figuring out what that means as we have had.

Uh...news flash here, Hugo...you’re the dictator of Venezuela, not Argentina.

Post from the HRM, The Queen of England:
“Dear Hugo,
Bugger off!
Sincerest Regards,
Elizabeth”

“Did the Falklands ever belong to Argentina?”

No, Spain once claimed them, but then Spain once claimed a lot of places, including Argentina. Don’t know why Argentina decided they should belong to them. Guess because they are the nearest large country, but then Uruguay is closer to Argentina then the Falklands. Why don’t they claim Uruguay too? Or for that matter, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile?

“China was shocked when they left Hong Kong without a whimper.”

Hong Kong and the Falklands are different. Hong Kong's lease was up. The Falklands doesn't have a lease. Britain isn't going to give them up.

Her Majesty's Navy was able to resupply at our Base in Ascencion Island. With the Maharishi Mahesh Obama at the helm I have to wonder if this bridge is any longer available.

Ascension Island is part of Her Majesty's Empire. The US Base is a tenant. Withdrawal of resupply rights could lead to problems with the landlord.

Exactly what the British Citizens of Hong Kong thought, but they are still there.
