Gun Instructor Accidentally Shoots Student [FL]

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An instructor teaching a concealed weapons safety class accidentally shot one of his participants in Orlando.

The class was being held at the Summit Church on Herndon Avenue, but the church was not sponsoring the class. The class was a NRA Concealed Weapons Safety Course.

Orlando police say Michael Phillips was teaching the class, when his gun accidentally went off, and shot Robert Frauman, Junior.

Frauman was shot in the foot. He was taken to the hospital, and is expected to recover.

Agree 100%.

I just have a problem with the idea that one can support a God-given right of self-defense, but then assert there can be legitimate restrictions on the method used (and no, I'm not talking about absurd examples like using a RPG or claymores).

It's kind of like the Hillary claim that she wants abortions to be "safe, but rare."

What a great learning experience. I bet none of the students who witnessed that will ever repeat that mistake.

My dad went to work in a metal shop once. The supervisor was taking him around showing him the different tools and explaining the safety procedures. When he got to the sheet metal shear, he said, "never put your hands under the shear and press this button." He did exactly what he had just told my dad not to do and cut off all four fingers. My dad said he always remembered that and never lost a finger.

I wouldn't go that far. Firearms are used to thwart crimes in this country millions of times each year. I would guess that only a tiny fraction of those good citizens have any formal training. Firearms, actually, are quite easy to operate safely. I could, and have, taught someone basic gun handling in 10 minutes.

For CCW, with drawing, reholstering, etc., I would again agree that formal training and diligent practice is very prudent.

Yup! It may not be intentional, though. Any instructor will tell you that “war stories” are a lot more fun to tell (and listen to) than the boring old legal stuff, etc. However, that’s not what students pay you for. Just because they had a good time in your class doesn’t mean you did right by them.

Personally, I like the states that do a background check; then, if you’re not a felon, they send you a license. Boats are a lot more dangerous than guns, and you don’t need a license to drive a boat.

That having been said, I’ll say something else: Wake up, you numbs! Get some training, and I don’t mean from Uncle Fred. Get your damn finger off the trigger. Learn about the Tueller Drill. As a starter, buy the NRA books (Basic Pistol, Personal Protection in and outside the Home, etc.) Quit target shooting and practice the tactical stuff. Learn the laws. Forget the coffee and donuts classes - there are good instructors around - find one.

BASIC gun handling, as in "this is how you load it, this is how you put it on safe, this is how you fire it, this is how you unload and clear it."

How long would that take you?

I can not stress enough that if you see someone mishandling guns, get away from them. "The RO should have done something about it," is not a good eulogy.

Thanks for the clarification. I agree completely on a point by point basis except that target shooting is good too as long as more practical shooting is practiced as well.
