WHARTON -- It began as a battle of the titans, with Rick Perry -- the longest serving governor in Texas history -- being challenged in the GOP primary by the state's senior U.S. senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison.
But as the multimillion-dollar contest comes to a close, Perry's bid for another four-year term appears to hinge not only on Hutchison's strength but on the fate of the third candidate in the race -- Debra Medina, a once-obscure insurgent whose showing in the March 2 primary will decide whether Perry wins outright or faces an April runoff. With Perry holding a seemingly insurmountable lead in polls, the governor's race in recent weeks began evolving into a surprise battle for second place as Medina appeared to be within striking distance of overtaking Hutchison, one of the state's dominant political figures.
But Medina's detractors -- as well as several independent analysts -- say she may have self-destructed in a Feb. 11 interview with conservative commentator Glenn Beck by not immediately disavowing a theory that the U.S. government may have played a role in the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
The former Wharton County Republican chairwoman quickly sought to repair the damage, saying there was no doubt that Muslim terrorists flew the hijacked planes on 9-11. Medina now says she believes the incident may have strengthened her candidacy by galvanizing supporters, positioning her for a strong showing against her two Republican rivals.
"Did it feel good? No. Am I sick of answering the questions? Yes. I am," she said in an hourlong interview last week in her Wharton campaign headquarters. "But at the end of day, I think it's going to be labeled backfire," she added, repeating her contention that she was set up in Beck's interview.

'though it perhaps may be more accurate to call RP a politician in his dotage, prone to scatterbrained and ill-considered responses to the Truthers who make up his entourage, than to say he has strong Truther sympathies. Perhaps.
However, it is flat-out wrong to say, as you did in your post #34, that RP is an anti-truther.
Love that grill!
Needs Poke and Beef...
I agree that we need more conservatives who support smaller government and a restoration of our liberties and strengths.
However, we don't need those who step into the RonPaul Moonbat Fringe - then it just gets weird.
Yes, it does! I could go for some of that right now! {drool}
Wow I have never heard spin at warp speed!! That's pretty funny....
LoL!
Same here ...held my nose and voted for Guv Good Hair. God help us.......
A Farouk Shammy?...Didn’t Billy Mays hawk one of those items when he was alive?
Better run than Texas? Keep thinking that as our state gets overrun from the Mexican hoards to the south.
Ron Paul is not a truther! Michelle Malkin, who has always despised Paul’s foreign policy, is hardly a credible source.
We completely agree on the birthers.....but, IMHO, that doesn’t mean that GOP candidates have an obligation to reject their support.
I would elect Malkin before Paul
No, but we should embrace them lightly.
The nonsense RP spouts is not in-your-face Trutherism, but is certainly intended to curry favor with the large Truther contingency of his Paulbot entourage. Whether this is a calculated pose on his part, or just a sign of his mental confusion, is evident to me.
Michelle Malkin is not the only one who despises RP's craven Paleo-crank foreign policy. I do, as do many others who post on FR (as you well know).
Brainfart?
