Recently rebuffed in its attempt to hold the 2016 Summer Games in Chicago, the U.S. Olympic Committee does not plan to enter a U.S. city in the race for the 2020 Summer Games and remains uncertain about when it will next attempt to bring a Games to U.S. soil, USOC Chief Executive Scott Blackmun said Saturday morning.
"The cold and hard reality is Chicago spent approximately $80 million on its bid," Blackmun said. "It's going to be difficult to get U.S. cities to continue to invest to that level unless they think they have a realistic chance of winning. The [International Olympic Committee] sent us a message, loud and clear, that they don't want the Games to be in the United States."

I have zero(no pun intended) sympathy for chicago or illinois. They keep electing the scumbag thieves that continue to rip them off.

This made my day! No blowing what $20+ billion for a 2 week event. London is spending over 10 billion pounds for their games. Vancouver went for a couple of hundred million to over $3 billion.
Now THAT is reality!!! Well done!

You make a good point but I would now rank Rio on top. You have a country where large sections of the population do not have basic infrastructure, for example clean running water, and the government is going to end up spending at least $20 billion to host the games.
My father was 19 years old and living in Newark when the World Fair was held in NYC. I remember him mentioning it but don’t know if he visited the Fair. Do you know what the grounds are used for today?
If you mean the ‘64 Fair, I’m the same age as your Dad.

It had fallen into disrepair for the most part to the best of my knowledge. From the site linked above, it seems like it has made a come-back. FReeper ari-freedom would prolly be better able to give you an up-to-date account.
Exactly. The Olympics and the media just exploit the youth of the world, for their monetary gain, anyway.
Thank you for your reply, no I miss read your original post. My father was born in Newark in 1920 and would have attended the 1939 World’s Fair. Sorry.
‘sawright.
The IOC is going to everything they can to give it to Africa that year anyway. How the World Cup goes this year may have a lot to do with it, but they made history by awarding Rio in 2016, and now they will try the same in 2020. Best to look at 2024 (if America or the world still exisits by then, God have mercy on us all).
“The cold and hard reality is Chicago spent approximately $80 million on its bid,”
You really have to ask this about Chicago?? C’mon Union bribes...Mafia Kickbacks...greasing Politicians palms.......It’s the Chicago Way...
Yes. Its a high price tag for a emerging market country, but some of those billions will go towards infrastructure upgrades like transportation and public facilities which probably wouldn’t of happened without an olympics.
Bazils economy has grown at an impressive rate the past decade. I think they’ll put on a great games.
It's just the collateral damage they take with them, specifically ME!
What a waste for different cities to spend all that money every time an Olympics comes around! Build one “uni-world” venue the summer and another for the winter. Hmmmm, just use Antarctica for the Winter Olympics!
Hey, that is my kid’s Olympics year! It’s the year my kid and friends dream of being there. And Obama can’t even ENTER a city in the running??
Thursday.
Canada has had only two Winter Olympics. The U.S. has had four winter Olymics.
I’d rather get the World Cup, especially since odds are that the Finals would be held right here in Dallas at Jerry World.
