Extra funds to support ongoing project to protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve
On February 4th, 2010, at the Goed Geld Gala in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery not only donated the annual amount of half a million Euros, they also handed over an additional check worth 1 million to Geert Vons, Sea Shepherd Conservation Societys General Director of the Netherlands and Alex Cornelissen, Director of Operations, Galapagos. The extra funds will support Sea Shepherds ongoing efforts to protect the Galapagos, a UN World Heritage Site.
Despite clear rules and legislation, commercial fisheries are still exploiting the legally protected Galapagos Marine Reserve. In particular, the illegal finning of sharks, the catching of tuna, marlin and other illegal poaching activities form a serious threat for the Galapagos Marine Reserve.
With this project funding, Sea Shepherd will both logistically and financially support the local authorities to protect this delicate and unique ecosystem. A primary goal of this project is to set up an Automatic Identification System for vessels. This will enable all the authorities and organizations involved to monitor illegally operating fishing vessels and to act instantly to enforce exiting regulations.
The Dutch National Postcode Lottery has made this concrete project to stop illegal poaching possible, thus enabling Sea Shepherd to better protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Sea Shepherd is extremely grateful for the support it has received.
Since 1989, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery has donated almost 3 billion to support good causes. This year, 75 social and environmental organizations will receive 513 million from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.

And that venerable research institute the Citizens Cetacacean of Japan, they probably don't like this at all!
You can write the Dutch consul here in San Francisco and let them know how terrible this group is. Or maybe go to their webpage and draw a distinction between vigalantes against poachers and anything that resembles terrorism.
...should make for an interesting new TV show.
Looks like they’ll be able to afford another goofy BatBoat after all.
please do not change the headline
Yes, that goofy boat that set a goofy record as the fastest circumnavigation of the world. Thank god for some reason when she tried to ram the big steel hulled ship her kevlar fiberglass was actually not able to puncture steel! s/
And they can sink the next BatBoat that gets in their way! BTW, isn’t it permissible to use firearms against those committing piracy like these eco-terrorists?
Yes.
Piracy definition: Robbery at sea (American Heritage dictionary)
What was again that they robbed the poachers of?
Trying to get $3,000,000 out of the Japenese whalers?
zot
No, see going to court is not considered robbery.
I hope they spend all their money on new boats. I also hope those boats get sunk.
I would donate to a fund to arm the Japanese vessels.
Yes and I hope those elephant poachers stop running and stand their ground! And that lady that butted in with the Gorillas and got killed, Summerhall or something.
Can’t people just stay at home and let the Yakuza have free reign!
Looks like the Sea Shepherds will be keeping their Dutch registry for a while - one nation that disagrees with them being branded “pirates” or “terrorists.”
We need more of this, and less of folks reading statements and holding conferences - ahem, “conservatives.”
The organizations will be attempting to enforce regulations?
Why don’t the Japanese fish, whale and “research” in their own waters? Have they mismanaged their own commercial fisheries - or what’s the problem at home?
What a waste of band width, and at bay can’t even get the title right.
Why aren't they free to do those things in international waters as long as they aren't breaking any laws and they aren't? If you propose that they are breaking international laws, then you must believe in the validity of international laws.
I guess they thought this had something to do with it.
