Sea Shepherd Receives an additional €1 Million Euros from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery

Extra funds to support ongoing project to protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve

On February 4th, 2010, at the Goed Geld Gala in Utrecht, the Netherlands, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery not only donated the annual amount of half a million Euros, they also handed over an additional check worth €1 million to Geert Vons, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s General Director of the Netherlands and Alex Cornelissen, Director of Operations, Galapagos. The extra funds will support Sea Shepherd’s ongoing efforts to protect the Galapagos, a UN World Heritage Site.

Despite clear rules and legislation, commercial fisheries are still exploiting the legally protected Galapagos Marine Reserve. In particular, the illegal finning of sharks, the catching of tuna, marlin and other illegal poaching activities form a serious threat for the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

With this project funding, Sea Shepherd will both logistically and financially support the local authorities to protect this delicate and unique ecosystem. A primary goal of this project is to set up an “Automatic Identification System” for vessels. This will enable all the authorities and organizations involved to monitor illegally operating fishing vessels and to act instantly to enforce exiting regulations.

The Dutch National Postcode Lottery has made this concrete project to stop illegal poaching possible, thus enabling Sea Shepherd to better protect the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Sea Shepherd is extremely grateful for the support it has received.

Since 1989, the Dutch National Postcode Lottery has donated almost €3 billion to support good causes. This year, 75 social and environmental organizations will receive €513 million from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery.

You raise a good point. In this case, the Japanese are still members of the IWC, no one is forcing them to remain a member.

The membership voted a ban on commercial whaling . If they wish to withdraw from the IWC your point would be valid.

As I understand it, the Japanese claim to be doing research, not commercial whaling. I can't judge whether or not that is so, that they are engaged in commercial whaling, if it is so, they should be condemned or sanctioned in some way by the IWC, not by some group of self styled enforcers who operate outside any rule or law.

” I can’t judge whether or not that is so”

I don’t understand why you can’t judge whether or not that is so. Thr facts are out there, the so-called research pretext is a sham. The IWC has in fact denounced what they are doing, they just have no enforcement capability. So vigilantes have filled in the void. In a perfect world the Marshall would have deputized them.

I hope you get a chance to whale watch this season. It really is a sight to behold.

I dunno, you can’t tell if a video of one of your heroes intentionally illegally ramming another vessel is an illegal act.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFGmR99-D0k&NR=1
You literally said that a video of Sea Shepherd intentionally illegally ramming isn’t a video fo Sea Shepherd intentionally ilegally ramming.
You are a liar.
You also claimed that Sea Shepherd has never done anything illegal.
When proof of illegal activities was presented, you said that all of it was sixteen years ago.
When it was pointed out that there are recent activities, you fled the thread.

Maritime piracy, according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) of 1982, consists of any criminal acts of violence, detention, or depredation committed for private ends by the crew or the passengers of a private ship or aircraft that is directed on the high seas against another ship, aircraft, or against persons or property on board a ship or aircraft.

The Sea Shepherds are pirates. Which by the way THEY are constantly saying, and indicating with their gay little symbol. They are just really really really bad at it. A Boy Scout troop has better leadership and training.

I can't wait. Will love to see the Batboat sink. Then the collision where the Bob Barker gets opened like a can of tuna, and finally the dip falling off the jet ski into antarctic water only to get a nice warm space in the Japanese Brig until he can face the court in Japan, for piracy. The most FAIL EVER for Capn' Paul and his gay little vegan pirate band.
Epic!
