I worked on the Draft Haig Committee in 1980 and truly appreciate all the wonderful Freeper comments about a real Hero.

As I said on an earlier thread, he really understood terrorism before many since he was the target of a terror attack when he was NATO commander. Since terrorism has been my main issue since 1978, it was why I supported him.

I hope people will come to understand how much he did for our country.

May he Rest in Peace.

“I keep getting slammed over Haig, but amazingly, I get NO ANSWER to that question.”

It did not happen in a vacuum. The press distorted the situation in ways that WOULD NOT EVER HAPPEN with HRC or any other liberal. You ask what if HRC did this...well...SHE WOULDN'T! But then Al Haig never did it either. And that is the point. It was simply one of the many exercises in “Point and Mock” that the press engaged in with respect to those they hated.

Back in the day the press mocked Haig at every turn BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID of him. I was in my early 20’s at the time and I could never put my finger on WHY they hated him.

Since their habit, long before that chaotic day at the whitehouse was to portray Haig as a hapless bungling fool but they could never actually point to anything that made Haig a “joke” and thus WORTHY of the mocking. This is actually one of the things which had begun to alert me to the fact that something was terribly wrong with the press. I'd begun to notice it long long long before Reagan was shot. If the press wanted to portray Haig or anyone else as a fool they went ahead and did counting on the authority of ALL of them piling on. It is no different than the Scooter Libby thing wherein they wanted to say Libby did a thing THEY PERFECTLY WELL KNEW THAT HE IN FACT DID NOT.

Lots of grownups in that photo. Unlike the Administration today.

That’s funny. He can handle it. And, because we have a sense of humor and aren’t obsessed with being politically correct, we will LOL. RIP Alexander Haig.

Sounds like a “patriot’s patriot” is a good description of him. He wasn’t loyal to any political dynasty but believed in our form of government and our national security and did what he felt was required to preserve it.

"...he should have stayed a career officer...it’s best to keep the Army out of politics and politics out of the Army...that’s the American way."

Have you forgotten Presidents Washington, Jackson, Harrison, Grant, T. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan, both Bushes and thousands more politicians that serves as officers, much less enlisted?

It's what Generals do.

Our last true great Secretary of State. No one can be perfect but Haig I feel knew well the realities of this world as well as the dangers it presented us as a nation. Thus his response "I am in charge here until return of the VP". Some forget the Cold War was still going on. I would expect such a comment and he may well have spared us an attack even from a terrorist state.

The world knew Haig meant business. That was one reason Reagan likely picked him and Reagan had good judgement in picking his cabinet much more so that nay POTUS since. No one gracing the office of Sec Of State since Haig has come even close to being as great or as respected in the world. We need more Haigs and less pandering. Rest in peace General.

Sad isn’t it?

The lunatics have taken over the asylum with most having the maturity of kindergartners (no offense to kindergartners).

Well done Sir, you have served your country well.

Here are two of Gen. Haig’s quotes.

“If they analyze the situation as thoroughly as they should, Muslims will realize they are the first targets. What are the fundamentalists really after? Simply taking over Islam and then turning its back on modernity. “

“It didn’t take long for the world to realize that the Shah was an enlightened liberal next to the bloody reactionary regime that followed, and which executed more people in three months than the Shah had done in 30 years. “

There is no doubt Obama used great judgment in picking his cabinet - he searched for every single marxist, socialist and communist whose background would disgust the average American. Perverts and terrorists topping the list.

Can anyone imagine Reagan having anything to do with the likes of Kevin Jennings?

You mean like uh maybe General George Washington first POTUS and several more to follow after who held the rank of General or at least were Commissioned Officers in the armed forces earlier in life?

I know you meant no offense to kindergartners. :)

I for one can vouch for the fact that most five year old children I have known would take better care of our country than those now in Congress and the Administration!

The press cannot be blamed for what came from his own mouth, with no prompting.

He was in control of the press conference.

More than the press, I would blame the people who are easily duped.

"Sad, he was one of the good guys. All Al Haig joke posted on this thread WILL be responded to. Keep your jokes to yourselves."

I agree, shipmate. He may have had his down moments, but he was head and shoulders above what we now call leadership.
