Exactly.
I do not understand where the sense is in shutting anyone out of conservatism. It’s about small government and liberty. Not burning gays at the stake.
We should invite gays into the movement. They are not stupid people, and many of them would likely be conservatives if there weren’t this assumption that we hate gays. (Which apparently, some on FR do.)
We should have a new message to gays: we oppose gay marriage on Constitutional grounds. We do not hate you, and you don’t need to hate us.
No one has to approve of what they do on their own time, but they’re still people, and we’re all equal in this country.
“We should invite gays into the movement”
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t invite drug addicts or polygamists into the Republican Party any more than unrepentant sodomites. I want my kids to grow up with clear values and not think that its normal or healthy for a man to find erotic stimulation with the fecal waste organ of another man. To me it’s common sense.
Small government and liberty BY DEFINITION make a person's private sexual choices between consenting adults ALTOGETHER IRRELEVANT. You want to give them relevance and bolster the ridiculous notion that those of us who understand that they are and MUST REMAIN irrelevant are somehow connected to "hate." It is bullsh*t, and you need to stop where you are and rethink your take on it.
“We should have a new message to gays: we oppose gay marriage on Constitutional grounds. We do not hate you, and you dont need to hate us.”
Oh, so conservatives should have a new message to gays that we oppose gay marriage at the federal level, and leave it to our constituencies to choose their own course at the state level? Then we should have taken that course with other civil rights issues, too, then. Too late for that. You federalize civil rights or privileges for some, you’re stuck with the battle for federalizing them for all.
If they’re going to make the argument you make, conservatives should also fight to remove marriage from the tax code entirely. And they should fight to end federal civil rights legislation.
Fat chance on either of those things happening.
You’re not giving up on this issue, I see.
How about opposing homosexual marriage on Judeo-Christian values - you know, those same values that America & our Constitution was founded.
btw, it's not "gay" to choose the perverted lifestyle of homosexuality that God has stated is an abomination. Of course, if you reject God and His morals, than you're no better than an animal without a conscience.
