I always thought that was a Bad rap on him...with his background as a General,...that is the first thing that is expected to be said.

****************************************

From Wikipedia:

Alexander Haig

In 1981, after the March 30 assassination attempt on Reagan, asserted before reporters "I am in control here" as a result of Reagan's hospitalization.

***************************snip***************************

This was an unlikely event considering that Vice-President Bush was merely not immediately available. Haig's statement reflected political reality, if not necessarily legal reality. Haig later said,

I wasn't talking about transition. I was talking about the executive branch, who is running the government. That was the question asked. It was not, "Who is in line should the President die?"

Years ago I flew into Reagan National Airport (before the name Reagan was attached to it). When I walked outside to get a cab, Haig was standing on the sidewalk in a trench coat smoking a cigarette waiting on a ride . . . I presume a limo. He was a big guy, looked to me well over six feet tall, maybe 6’ 4”. All I could think about was, “Everything is under control. . . I’m in charge.”

Prayers for the big man. I hope he gets better. I kinda liked the guy, egotistical as he was. LOL

Ernest, did you ever notice when ever he was on one of the news shows he almost always had a little sly smile. It was like a trade mark to me. Like he was thinking something but dare not say it out loud. Something telling and witty. Another great American laid to rest. I hope we have John Bolton around for a long time. I would like to see him as a future Sec. of State or some high office like Homeland Security or the such.

Dang nice guy! I met him when I was in the USAF. I was a cook on a base he visited in Germany. If I remember correctly he was secretary of state under Carter then. I got to serve him lunch! He stuck up for me when a TOO full of himself CMSGT jumped on me because HE was nervous. The general jumped HIM back and told him to lay off! I paid for that, but it was well worth it! Thanks again General! prayers headed your way!!!!

Right...just found this thread:

Is something weird going on here at FR? Or is it my gas-powered obsolete PC?

I hope he makes it ,...but at 85 the body can't handle much.

John Bolton would be great in the next Rep Administration,...which could happen soon based on what Cheney thinks.

May he be okay.

General, thank you for your efforts over the years. You weren’t Ronald Reagan, but you helped him.

That is the repeat of the tired old cannard from the lamestream media. They would not get away with twisting it now because of the internet.

The question put to Haig asked who's in charge. Haig's answer, in toto was, "At the White House? Me."

That interrogatory sentence has been conveniently left out and puts a whole different light on the subject.

Thank you, Ernest. You have a better memory than I. But that particular phrase has been conveniently left out in order to paint Haig as a grasping villian. Nothing could be further than the truth. He is a great American.

Prayers up for Al Haig & his family.

I worked for United Technologies when Al Haig was president and he eventually left UTC to become Secretary of State. He was a brilliant boss who commanded respect from all who worked for him — and there were nearly 300,000 of us at the time.

Years before I met him, there had been a fatal plane crash with almost all of UTC’s top execs on the plane. (From that point on most companies developed policies that didn’t allow too many top execs to fly together.) While Al Haig could have easily had someone else make the sad phone calls, instead he took on the job of informing the families and seeing that they were taken care of, personally. It was impressive. That’s why, years later, when he made the “I’m in charge” remark, we knew what he was really saying “I’ve stepped up to the plate”.

I hope that he survives this.

Enough to know he wasn’t standing around with the rest of them wondering.......what do we do what do we do what do we do.

Prayers for you General Haig.
