4 years: Bernie gets more than 'max'
NY Post ^ | Feb. 19, 2010 | LIZ SADLER and LEONARD GREENE

The jailer's going to jail -- for a long time.

Former Police and Correction Commissioner Bernard Kerik, once dubbed "America's Cop" for his 9/11 leadership, was hammered with a four-year federal prison sentence yesterday for a slew of felonies -- including lying to the White House.

The sentence is 15 months more than the maximum punishment he could have received under federal guidelines based on the plea deal he negotiated.

"...felonies[...]including lying to the White House..."

Lies from The White House itself are still OK, though

>including lying to the White House.

WTF? Lying in court, under oath, that I get... we call it perjury, but this??

I think the actual prosecution was for perjury. He apparently left out some important items in his filings during his background check when nominated as the head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

This is his punishment for being a Republican. A good man, who foolishly cut some corners.

Unlike the current crop who can proudly declare themselves communists and haters of America. They will always have a home in the ‘rat party.

Back when we knew better, a fellow could actually get impeached for that (wink).

The truth was spectacular enough in Kerik’s case. He didn’t need to lie in order to look good. There are tax evasion charges too which strike me as odd. He had the fame, he didn’t have to fudge his tax return to rake in a lot of cash.

Some interesting items at the end of the article:

Along the way, Rudy Giuliani's protégé stained the former mayor's legacy and embarrassed President Bush.

In his failed plea for leniency, Kerik, who was appointed corrections commissioner in 1998 and police commissioner in 2002, presented dozens of letters of support from family, friends, clergy, cops and survivors of 9/11 victims.

But notably absent was a letter from Giuliani, who was dogged on the presidential campaign trail in 2008 by questions about Kerik.

I have serious suspicions about someone who rises from the rank of police detective to NYC corrections commissioner in 4-5 years. The story behind his rise in the ranks of the Giuliani administration would be a fascinating one.

Yeah he left out some details like being a cop on the take and tax evasion.

He "fudged" on his tax return by failing to disclose the free work that was being done on his condominium by the Mafia contractor seeking city contracts.

The whole affair was a very sordid one. I suspect he was run through the wringer in a very public way because there was a lot behind the scenes that hasn't been made public at all.

Which would have been OK if he had included them?
...then again, look who’s the Treasury head....

Then let him become a Democrat.

This guy used his connections to climb his way into positions that any ordinary person would never have gotten into. If he was a jug-eared black guy from Chicago with a Muslim-sounding name, he'd be Barack Hussein Obama.

One little item of interest in his case is that a lot of rank-and-file New York City police officers resented the hell out of him. Here was a former high school dropout named to become the New York City Police Commissioner in 2000 by Rudy Giuliani . . . while at the same time the City was disqualifying prospective police officers for promotion for failing to meet minimum college education requirements.

I’m not defending him at all. I’m just saying that the ‘rat pack smells just as bad but are loved by half the country.

Some years ago, a friend loaned me a copy of Kerik’s autobiography. The guy clearly has something on somebody. He had a meteoric rise from a New Jersey correction officer to Rikers Island and from there to One Police Plaza. He had been an Army MP.
