The Republican presidential nominee, an Arizona senator, was a maverick, which was part of his charm. He spoke and acted impulsively, which was part of his problem. Voters thought his entertaining dimensions might be incompatible with presidential responsibilities. For example, he selected a running mate most Americans had never heard of and who had negligible experience pertinent to the presidency. This was 1964.
Barry Goldwater, whose seat John McCain occupies, chose to run with Bill Miller, a congressman from Lockport, N.Y., near Buffalo. Miller, Goldwater cheerfully explained, annoyed Lyndon Johnson. After the Goldwater-Miller ticket lost 44 states, Miller retired to Lockport, where he practiced law and lived in dignified anonymity until his death in 1983. Although he had served as an assistant prosecutor of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg and spent seven terms in Congress, no one suggested he should be considered for the 1968 Republican presidential nomination.
Yet Sarah Palin, who with 17 months remaining in her single term as Alaska's governor quit the only serious office she has ever held, is obsessively discussed as a possible candidate in 2012. Why? She is not going to be president and will not be the Republican nominee unless the party wants to lose at least 44 states.
Conservatives, who rightly respect markets as generally reliable gauges of consumer preferences, should notice that the political market is speaking clearly: The more attention Palin receives, the fewer Americans consider her presidential timber. The latest Post-ABC News poll shows that 71 percent of Americans -- including 52 percent of Republicans -- think she is not qualified to be president.(continued)

Sarah has never ran for president, hasn’t given her own detail ideas for America yet, hasnt faced any challengers to debate the issues and yet she shouldnt even consider to run, she isn’t worthy or qualified to run, she should just leave and go home because some want her to do that?
These guys seem to do this every 3 to 6 months. They probably know that they need more readers, and what better way to get them than to write about Palin.
Georgie Will protects his Brie and Chablis invites. He has no idea how the other 85% of the Country thinks.
Pray for America and Gov Palin
Whoever wants to get by Palin has the heavy lifting to do. Nobody out there seems likely to do it.

Hey George Will, what did you say about 0bama, 2 years before the 2008 elections, when CBS came out with this poll?
“According to CBS News, only 29% of registered voters considered then presidential candidate Barack Obama experienced enough to be President in August of 2007, just six months before the Iowa caucuses. This CBS News poll shows that a plurality of Democrat primary voters considered Obama to lack the experience to serve as President. By a almost a 2-to-1 margin, Independents answered the question negatively.”

Man that is quite the comparison.
She also showed that grit is no substitute for seasoning.
Truer words are hard to come by.
Because the media convinced them that if they didn't, they were racist bigots.....
Yes, one doesn't have to be sold 100% on Sarah, to be nauseated by these impostor intellectual elitists.
I’m not sold on Palin either (although I like her moxie)—but it makes me laugh when anyone declares with certainty who will and will not be president. No one knows what will or won’t happen next week, much less two years from now.
You think Sarah is a lying, America hating, self-centered, freedom grabbing, abortion loving, Constitution shredding, commie?
Unbelievable.
Really.
The George Well, Peggy Nooner and David Jerks of the party are really painting themselves into a corner.
Go ahead you elitist pricks and just join the 0bama party already.
Newt?
Attempt at humor?
We don’t need a fool that sold his dignity on Nancy’s couch, promoting the climate scam. (good that he did that though!)
I just emailed him.....
Mr. Will,
I’ve enjoyed reading your columns and articles for many years. However, in recent times you have begun to develop tone-deafness” to what Americans want. Your latest column is another example of that tone-deafness.
Americans are sick and tired of the political wrangling. So why do we continue to elect men and women we wouldn’t trust to baby-sit our dogs to go to Washington? By and large, the political process is so corrupt that only snakes are running for office. When you DO get a good candidate, the political machine in Washington descends en masse and buries them. And if they arent buried at home, they are corrupted by the cesspool that is Washington, DC.
Enter Sarah Palin. She’s an outsider, not part of the establishment. No, she doesn’t have the political handshake down to a “t” and she doesn’t make all the proper cocktail parties.
I am an electronic technician/computer programmer. I grew hunting and fishing in rural Alabama. I used to haul hay in the blistering summer heat. I’ve worked with my hands and worked with my head. So has Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin is one of US, not one of YOU. And what scares you to death is that she is generating a tremendous groundswell of support without your “help” and your “approval”.
You, the beltway crowd, are so far disconnected from the everyday working Americans that you do not even understand the phenomenon occurring right in front of your eyes.
No, Palin probably won’t run in 2012. If she does, she probably won’t win. She would have to fight as vicious assault from the GOP as she would from the Democrats. I’ve been following politics steadily since 1979 when I was in High School. What you, the media “elite” of BOTH parties are doing to Palin is repulsive.
You decry the lack of experience of Sarah Palin. Where were you when Barak Obama began running for president? He started his presidential campaign the minute he won his Senate bid. Mr. Obama is the most unprepared President in my lifetime, and that includes Jimmy Carter.
Why dont you do yourself a favor Take a few weeks and travel the back roads of America and visit the mechanics, the engineers, the farmers and the assembly line workers. Do it without cameras. Just talk to people.
You will be amazed, and humbled, at what you dont know about America.
